Another reason, besides the ones Tuethis mentioned, you might be trading fat for muscle is if you're getting adequate protein for the first time in your life. Your muscles might be delighted to be able to grow a bit. More true if you're also exercising.
Don't worry though. Muscle is leaner than fat (obviously ) and takes up less space, hence the lost inches. Not to mention that increased muscle needs more calories to support itself and will, in turn, burn more fat.
Anyway, try not to worry about the scale, and I guarantee you the weight and inches will drop! I've also heard (and experienced myself) that a lot of us either drop weight OR inches at one time. Usually a lose of a few inches is followed by a woosh of a few pounds.
