Default Do any of you experience acid indigestion?

Me again,
I am nearing the end of my first week on low carbing and noticed in the past two days I have indigestion. Do any of you experience this and know the cause or what will help? I have not really experienced this since I was pregnant 5 years ago!

Thanks,
Melissa

Hi Melissa,

It's not common to experience indigestion by just doing low-carb, so it may be related to the type of food you are eating? Why not list some of your recipes and daily menu to identify the cause and eliminate it.

Your post caught my attention because i experienced the exact opposite.
I was getting more and more indigestion and heart burn especially when id go to bed at night.
Within the first week of LCing I noticed it was totally gone.

Sorry this doesnt help you

Default Indigestion...

nalasimba,

I experienced the same thing for about a week. I think my stomach was getting used to the high fat proteins. I took a few sugar free tums when needed. In any event, it went away and now I never have it. Hope you feel better soon.

Betsy

Fumih,

Actually, I feel like it is a burning sensation in my stomach and sometimes I feel acid coming back up into my throat. Also sometimes gets the burps. My body definitely lets me know when it does not like something I deposited in my stomach! Lately, on this WOL, I have not had any problems with it. It makes me wonder if I have a sensitivity to wheat or sugar or a chemica in one or both.

I was having indegistion (sp) a couple days ago (heartburn too) then I realized that I had ate a 1/2 cup (with cheese) Jalepeno Pepper cheese spread (.25 carbs for every 1/4 cup).

Gawd, it was deliscious but wasnt worth the indigestion and heartburn afterwards

My indigestion lessened on lowcarb also. It flares up when I eat peanuts though.

The first week or so my stomach hurt from all the protein, I think. But I was coming from being a non/low meat eater.

And mine went bye-bye too as soon as I went on this WOL. Same with my boyfriend who joined the diet with me. I haven't heard of anyone's getting worse. What have you been eating? Drinking water etc?

If I happen to cheat, my stomach quickly reminds me of what my pre-low-carb days were like...

If you were on a diet low in fat and/or protein, your body may have "forgotten" how to make the enzymes necessary to digest the foods on a L/C regime. The best thing to do is to get some digestive enzymes that contain lipase, pancreatin and protease at a healthfood store. In fact, I think Dr. Atkins sells special enzymes for the diet. I believe enzymes are a great help not only for proper digestion but to make the diet more effective by getting the body to utilize all nutrients to the max.

Raquel,

Thanks for the insight! That makes a lot of sense. I never would have thought of that on my own. Think I'll start taking some supportive enzymes. Happy LCing!

I find that a little confusing because years ago they used to recommend milk (and honey) for people with peptic ulcers to neutralize the acid. I'm lactose intolerant and so is most of my family, and the usual symptoms are bloating and gas, for some people loose stools and cramps because the digestion of lactose occurs in the small intestine. Perhaps you had not fully digested whatever you ate before the milk, or maybe you had not had milk in a long time and your stomach needs to get used to it again, after all, milk is not as easily digested as we think, it takes a long time for it to be digested.
