Question Seasonal Eating

It seems I can not get enough of fresh spring veggies right now. I crave mixed baby greens for salad, and I made embarassingly audible 'yum-yum' noises over asparagus the other night.

Last summer, new to LC, I had to keep tomatoes in moderation, but I enjoyed them as never before - and in fall, I had a bit of a hard time staying away from root vegetables. Looking back, I see a new trend for myself.

I'm not aware of ever craving foods in season before. Then again, maybe that doesn't happen much if most of your food comes in frozen entree form.

I think it's more than just the fact that asparagus is tastier in spring than fall - I think since I'm eating more whole foods, my body is responding to natural, seasonal cycles of available food.

Does that make sense? Is anyone out there experiencing the same thing?

I love the fact that the recent heat-wave out here has triggered my summer appetite. Fresh raw broccoli and red peppers, strawberries and OMG *peaches*!!

I made a perfectly yummy salad with julienned broccoli, red pepper, some Thai ginger sauce and some full fat plain yogurt. Pure heaven! (mayo works too, but I like the yogurt better)

Cheers!

Yes!

I never really thought about it as seasonal eating. Now that my tastebuds are not deaded with the constant intake of sugar, just about every fresh fruit and veggie out there tastes like heaven.

Oh boy I know what you mean, me too, me too. I barely ate veggies before LCing and now I get excited about a good salad or the fact that I just found a veggie I can eat and mash like potatoes, without having a craving for potatoes!!!

I am excited about berries this summer, about discovering new root veggies...I'm excited about eating spinach salads cause I know it's got iron and is low carb...I'm eating better than I EVER did and loving it!!!

My seasonal cravings are mostly for fresh fruit in the summer -- peaches, nectarines, plums -- and corn on the cob. A little further out from the city than where I live there are still some farms (rapidly getting replaced by acres of McMansions) where we can get these things fresh in the summer and they taste so much better than they do in the supermarket. Unfortunately, they are also somewhat high in carbs. I eat them every once in a while in the summer, but I'm looking forward to maintenance when I can eat them more regularly (although in moderation).

I haven't noticed seasonal cravings for anything else, other than tomatoes. I do not like tomatoes unless they are fresh and local. I'll eat a little bit of tomato on my salad in the summer (again, somewhat high in carbs), but not during the rest of the year.

I get many more cravings for fruit than I do for sugary junk food. Maybe that is an incentive for me to push the weight loss so I can get to maintenance -- I'll be able to eat more fruit!
