Question Glucosamine/Chondroitin??

I read the following statement on Keto.org

"We strongly recommend the following supplements to ketogenic dieters!

Calcium, Magnesium, Multi-Vitamins, Glucosamine/Chondroitin, and Fish-Oil capsules or another source of Omega-3 Fatty Acids."

I can understand the Calcium as my diet does not contain alot of dairy, besides butter and cheese, and magnesium I get from dark vegetables, Omega 3 I heard is important, but is there any basis to Glucosamine/Chondroitin ?

By the way, the eggs I get (The Country Hen brand)states they are the first to have Omega 3 in it?? Country Hen

hi Scott,

Hmm .. I toured the keto.org website, and there aren't many references offered. It appears to be a personal site, with mostly opinions and observations which may or may not be helpful. There is nothing to substantiate the use of glucosamine or chondroitin for ketogenic dieting. These supplements are usually taken for arthritis and joint inflammations. In fact, my research on glucosamine in particular shows that it will work AGAINST your low-carbing efforts, as it's known to raise blood sugar levels and increase insulin resistance. Check out this post about glucosamine.

hth,

Doreen

doreen T,

That was an interesting article on the effects of gluosamine to your blood sugar. I am currently taking glucosamine on a preventative basis for arthritis. I wonder if this is contributing to my sugar cravings by keeping my blood sugal levels elevated. Will taking chromium counteract this or do you think maybe I should stop taking this glucosamine?

Default Glucosamine ?

I have been taking it for several years and it definately helps my arthritic knees, also has helped others in my family. I had heard that you can gain weight with it, and after being diagnosed with diabetes, attended a month long diabetic counselling group. At that time the question came up and the dietician debunked the theory that it would raise blood sugar levels and advised the questioner to do what works...

On the other hand if we are dealing with inflammation, perhaps ginger and curcumin and bromeliad might work as well? I just hate to quit something that works...

Anybody have comments re: supplements for inflammation? Maybe this should be a cross post...
