Not everyone gets the fat around the abdomen, though. For whatever reason I always put it on my hips and thighs. My weight generally fluctuated between only 150 - 160. I know many larger people who were much healthier than I. And yes, I was insulin resistant, getting hypoglycemic episodes, and with a very dismal family history of early T2. So many crazy hormonal things are associated with insulin resistance that sometimes it's hard to tell just by looking.
Given that I was never very heavy, I don't think losing weight has helped nearly as much as directly controlling sugar and lowering insulin levels! Cutting straight to the chase, right?
But I do agree that the particular pattern of fat deposition on the abdomen is a fairly strong signal of IR, it's just not the only place it turns up for some.
