Question Is Atkins safe for 70+ ?

I've been working on the Atkins plan for just under a month, and it's working really well for me. I'm sticking to the Induction plan, as the low carbs don't bother me, I don't have cravings (or when I do, I just drink more water), and I love the smaller numbers on the scale each week.

My parents, who are over 70, are fighting recent weight gains. My dad, who usually weighed around 200 lbs for most of his life, has shot up to nearly 265. He cycles about 5-10 miles a day, but has a horrible sweet tooth and (like all of us before LC) eats a lot of carbs. Health wise (other than the weight gain and it's attendant problems) he's ok. Mom's probably in the 200 lb range.

Is Atkins safe for them, or is another LC plan better? I'd particularly like to hear back from older members who have adopted the LC lifestyle.

Thanks in advance,
Warmest regards to all,
George F

They definitely need to consult with their physician first.
As people get older, certain organs get weaker. If they are working into early stages of renal failure, high protein/fat diets can be very detrimental.

Hi George,

Yes, Atkins is safe for people of all ages. In fact, Dr Atkins himself is now over 70.

Of course, another plan might suit them better. How about checking our "Which low carb plan is right for me?" on the right side of the screen? Better yet, ask them to check, so they can make their own decision.

But do encourage them to see their doctors first, as Tom advises. In fact, everybody who begins a low carb eating programme should see their doctor first for tests as advised by Dr Atkins.

Atkins and Protein Power are eating plans that are safe for life.

I have every intention of keeping up the Atkins WOE long past 70!

Keep on, keepn' on!
