ATKINS SAUCE Oct 9 2003

Low-carb ketchup for millions on meat diet

By Rosa Prince And Fiona Cassidy

ATKINS dieters are to get their own tomato ketchup to splash over their sausages.

The low carbohydrate sauce is being introduced by Heinz for the millions of Brits on the controversial meat-rich weight loss plan.

Spokeswoman Yvette Murphy said: "People who are lowering carbohydrate intake will appreciate a new version of our ketchup."

Most sauces are barred to Atkins dieters because they are high in carbohydrates. One-Carb has one gramme per tablespoon. Most sauces have four.

The ketchup will go on sale next year if a trial in America is successful. Other Atkins-friendly sauces may follow, said Heinz, as sauce companies bid to retain their share of the £503million-a-year sauce market in the UK.

Friends star Jennifer Aniston and singer Geri Halliwell say the Atkins diet has helped them slim, but some doctors say is it dangerous.

But it is still proving popular and supermarket giant Waitrose said yesterday sales of red meat had rocketed. The Federation of Bakers said bread sales had fallen by up to two per cent a year since 2000.

- I don't think it's out in the US yet.....

There are several LC tomato sauces available from the various online retailers. I have Walden Farms tomato sauce that I got mail order (and BBQ) and it's pretty good

Safeways do their own reduced sugar and salt which tastes OK and is a bout half the carbs of Heinz.

Tesco has their own reduced sugar and salt one too - again about 1/2 the carbs.
The Heinz one is out in the US now so it won't be long until it gets here.

Hi

How about making your own : this is a recipe I picked up but not used as I am not a great ketchup user anyway

12 oz. tomato paste
12 oz. water
6 oz. vinegar
10 splenda tablets or to taste (could use granulated)
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 tablespoon salt
(Optional) pinch of cloves, cumin, other spices you might like
Disolve splenda tablets in water then add remaining ingredients. Blend until combined. Its claimed there are approx 1 gram per tablespoon/54 grams in entire recipe but I would recount it - and remember if you do use splenda granulated it will add carbs.
