Hi iggypucker!

Don't freak too much unless you are near a loo! In England you can buy sugar free chocolate made for diabetics. It's made with sorbitol. Yea, it's delicious and sugar alcohols don't stall me either but one bar and within 5 hours I'm rushing to the toilet every few minutes and doubled up with stomach cramps. That's cos when I start a bar I just have to finish it and even on the wrapping it says to keep consumption of sugar alcohols to less than 25g a day!

Just thought I'd warn you!

Robert

Smile Hey there, Iggy!

I guess we all better heed that warning about eating too much too quick. I was just introduced to a Pure De-Lite chocolate bar last Saturday. It didn't bother me at all! I thought it was wonderful! For more input about it, check out the older thread entitled "Malitol" (That's the name of the sugar alcohol which Pure De-Lite uses. ~Carolyn

In the St. Louis area, we can buy that specific brand at Walmart, as well as the local health food stores. Other brands are available from Walgreens and grocery stores. They're not hard to find.

Default BEWARE THE HIDDEN CARBS !!!

I too loved these, and thought the same as you until I ran the figures thru the hidden carb calc and it came up with like 22 CARBS !!! Not to mention the horrible gas pains...ugh.

But if you live close to a Walmart they sell them there for .96 !!!

Good Luck !!

I believe that they use the Dr. Atkin's approach to "Net Carbs" where they subtract the carbohydrates such as fiber, glycerine and sugar alcohols, which either are not digested or are digested but do not impact blood sugar more than negligibly.

I believe that they are ok and only count as 1 carb as stated?

Anyone else have any input?

Yes, the Effective Carb Count is 1, 2 or 3 grams depending on the bar. The other ingredients (maltitol, sorbitol and glycerine) are considered not to affect insulin levels and therefore are "neutral" for people on LC.

BUT some people stall on sugar alcohols. And don't resume losing until they cut them out. So just be warned. If you try them and find that you keep losing, then you are one of the lucky ones. (YMMV = Your Mileage May Vary)

Almost everyone has the 'laxative" effect of the sugar alcohols.

Hope this helps.

I bought one--just one, Thank Goodness--Pure De-Lite Espresso Truffle at a local health food store. It was pure heaven for under one carb. I'm going to splurge and buy 4 or 5 to savor on Christmas Day. I figure I'm going to end up splurging a bit anyway, and these are every bit as good as regular chocolate. I didn't get any kind of stomache reaction from the one I ate, but if I do, I think it might be worth it (especially if it keeps me out of the Christmas cookie platter)!

Thank you all for your help. I really do appreciate it. It's nice to know people care enough to answer the questions others do not know. This site has really been a big help to me.

Hi Everyone, I eat an occasional sugar free bar, usually Ross but occasionally pure de-lite. I don't have any laxative effect at all but I do get a slight feeling of bloating. Gone next day. It's worth it since it keeps me away from real sugar. Good luck over Christmas, everyone and happy new year.

Hi Iggy and HLFAN,

I think the key word is 'occasioanal'. My problem is that if I start a bar of chocolate I have to finish it. Result: 100g of diabetic chocolate consumed. Serious gas and running to loo. Recently I've founf muesli bars here made with malitol. These are small enough for me to eat a whole one with no side effects.

Yeah, you should experiment iggypucker...but I'd say don't eat too much at one sitting.

Seasons greetings,

Robert

Default We tried them

Iggster and I found them at WalMart. Good Sh*t!!!! Iggs loves the dark chocolate and I'm fond of the Chocolate Mint. They didn't have the treasures but the had the bars. It's much better than the "nutrition bars" chocolate. I didn't see any glycerine in the ingredients list. I think the carbs are actual on the label. Neither of us had adverse effects....ie:gas or stalling on them....

I think this may be an exception to the "if it sounds too good tobe true..." rule.

Tastes awesome!! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all!!

I tried the peanut butter, hazelnut and espresso truffles. I adore the espresso truffles. The others were good, but just not AS good as the espresso, but I'm sure that's a matter of personal preference. I am getting a little territorial about them, though. I had two left after Christmas, and my son ate one this afternoon! Ugh! Oh, I know it's good to share with him that sugar is not a pre-requisite to scrumptious goodies, but it was MINE! {{{{my precious....}}}

Thumbs up Pure Delight milk chocolates

If you need chocolate try the "pure delight " milk chocolate bars...they are sooo good, I would never think they were low carb. they might have some hidden carbs but at leats they will be better that eating a regular chocolate bar which will have a lot more carbs and sugar.
have a great day!
