Question Need help to figure out a soup recipe

This may sound crazy.....but I like the broth that you get with the oriental ramen soup packages. Do any of you out there know or can figure out a recipe to make it. I guess I could just buy a bunch of packets and throw away the noodles, but

I guess I would go to a Chinese or Japanese grocery and see if they carry it in powdered or liquid form.

Don't know the contents, but any package you pick up should be able to give you a list of ingredients, to make sure you're not getting something you'd rather not eat.

I tried that at a local Asian store here, and the nice lady that owns it looked at me like I was nuts. She had no clue.
Here is the list of ingredients:
salt (1st ing. no wonder I like it so much
soy sauce
msg
dehydrated vegs (onion, garlic, chive)
sugar
spices (this is the key, what spices?)
beef extract
lactose
hydrolyzed corn
wheat and soy protein
Of course, I want a much healthier version (lo salt, no msg, lo/no sugar, etc)
I am usually pretty good at figuring out what is in a dish, but this one has me stumped. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Jean

It would most likely be star anise and depending on the origin, perhaps lemon grass.

I used to buy a paste in a Vietnamese grocery store that was used in making the soup called pho. I can't remember what it had in it as far as sugar and stuff like that goes, but it's similar to what you're looking for. It came in a jar and a little bit went a long way.

I wouldn't get the packages. The ingredients on there read like a nightmare.

I had a really good broth the othe rnight. I baught beef marrow bones, pork neck bones, and used some left over lamb bones. I put them all in a large pot and simmered overnight. There wasn't any hidden ingredients or through the roof sodium values, but it was hearty and very good.

There is a salt free chicken broth you can get. It's Sheltons brand. While its great for cooking, I wouldn't recomend it for drinking. Even when I was really sick this stuff was just ick
