Default Diuretics..What a bummer!

I have been reading in Atkins book about diuretics and how they interfere with weight loss.. Now I am sort of bummed out out that.

There is some information there about natural diuretics but of course it says to check with your doctor and have him monitor you when switching over.. Has anyone given up hydrochlorithiazide for natural supplements? I have been borderline high blood pressure and have been taking 25MG pill once a day and that has brought my blood pressure down and stopped ankle swelling..

I have been sooo good on this food plan and have slowed up to a stop on weight loss... now I am going up and down 2 pounds when ever I check.. no progress ... :-(
I also have been taking some natural, over the counter, tablets for hot flashes... and I am wondering if they have an effect on weight loss..

This is so depressing.. I know as the weight comes off the blood pressure problem should get better... BUT how do I get there from here??? I sure don't need doctor appointments (bills) every week to monitor me..

Meanwhile my husband is going down down down... and I am eating the same things he is... and even less..

HELP!!!

Hi there,
I am also hypertensive, and am on Hydrochlorthiazide and another antihypertensive. I think you are just going to hand on, don't stop taking your pill, and eventually your blood pressure will go down. Don't compare yourself to your husband...for whatever reason, men seems to lose quickly...much more so than women...so please don't beat yourself up over that...don't compare...we are all different.
I know that I was at Doc's last Tuesday...my BP was the lowest it has been for years...with the pills yes, but after losing 19 pounds. He thinks that eventually I may not need the combo of pills, and maybe nothing, but it sure isn't yet. You are on a low dose of HCT...I am on 50...so while it may be affecting your weight loss, it may not also. You could just be losing inches right now...that happens, or your body adjust slowly to whatever you lose....
Hang in there, it works...will work for you...and try to not compare yourself to anyone....and thank goodness we are all different...can you imagine a world with everyone the same...blah!!
Chin up kiddo...you are doing great

You might consider asking your doctor to switch you to an equivalent dosage of Lasix, which doesn't have the same weight loss issues.

I don't know about the Lasix...it is a much stronger diuretic, and is not usually used as a antihypertensive...mostly for congestive heart failure etc...it works in a different area of the kidney and does reduce blood pressure, but only for short term. HCT is much better for blood pressure...we use the Lasix usually only to get rid of water load in pretty sick people....and then switch them to another drug. People with chronic CHF can be on Lasix every day, but they need it because their hearts are not pumping very well, and the lungs get bogged down.
Hope that helps

I have been on a diuretic and a beta blocker for a couple years because of high blood pressure. My doctor recommended Atkins to me and has been very supportive. After about a month on this WOE I approched him about changing my medications because of possible interference in weight loss. He doesnt want to change them at this point because they work well for me and I am losing weight but he has monitored my blood pressure and has cut the beta blocker to half the dosage of what I was taking before. All this to say - these meds dont always have an adverse effect on weightloss. Good luck to you

I take Bumex, Coreg, Zestril, etc. for heart failure. I haven't noticed it slowing weight loss *yet*. Even if it does, I have to have these meds so I will take the weight loss as it comes.
