Default Had the most interesting conversation today with a nutritionist!

At work today, I was talking to a guy who said he was a nutritionist. We were talking about the SB diet book, and I said that I am "Pro Atkins", he then asked me if my blood type was O, and that he has found that some diets work better for those with certain blood types!

He was also very Pro Atkins, he kept saying to me that "my ancestors went around eating meat" LOL
He also said that losing 18 1/2 lbs in 8 months is pretty good (my loss so far) and not slow at all. He said that is the way you want to lose.
I found this website pretty amusing:

I don't hold stock in the blood-type theories floating around. According to them, I would lose best on high-carb, low fat....

Bwahahahahaaaa! Sure.

Now Tater,
I did do quite well on a type A high-carb low fat diet. I didn't starve to death, did I?

I think it's a bunch of hooey too.

Its BS, I'm A+ and suffer on a high carb diet. Reactive hypoglycemia. Boy was I happy when I bought that book thought and found out what I should be eating! lol

Quite frankly all of our ancestors ran around eating meat so there's no way I'm going to buy into anything that prescribes a diet based on blood type!

Thank Gawd Im an O'type. I dont think I was ever a caveman.. I think I was a big meat eating tyrannosaurus rex ! lmao (and lets face it .. our very early ancestors ate meat becauses thats what there was to eat before sedentary farming life became the norm.) IF we were all nomadic meat eaters, we'd all be slender because we'd have to 1) chase down the meat before we eat it 2) go thru a MUCH more difficult and labor intensive butchering job than opening a pc of plastic wrapped styrofoam 3) Have to chop wood and haul it for the fire we cook it on etc...

Well, you get the picture. Whatever calories was in the food they burned them by the sheer work needed just to survive. No pulling up in front of Mickey'D's and ordering 1 brontosaurus burger to go please.

Just to stay on subject .. Im O+ and I know beyond a shadow of a doubt if Im to lose weight and thrive in life.. Low Carb will be only way to do it.

Be well all. Happy losing and much control to everyone.

When I originally read the book I thought it was a very interesting idea, but the authors science was sketchy.

I wish I had links, but there is now some much better evidence of different dietary needs based on genetic heritage coming out of the scientific anthropological community.

However:
It is highly unlikely that anyone evolved eating a low fat high-carb diet as we think of it now. It is evolutionarily unsound as well as being completely unavailable in nature. I do think it suggests a possible research angle between those who do best on moderate fat/ moderate protien with tons of veggies, and those who do better on high fat/ high protien with more moderate veggies.

In the US where nearly every one is a mongrel, I'm not sure that dominant genetics will necessarily be revealed through to the blood type any more.

Bottom line: he fails to prove any genetic link between ABO blood typing and metabolism. Why did he pick ABO typing, anyway? A and B are only two antigens.

We're mutts - there's no link. That's like saying blonde haired people should eat a certain way, brunettes should eat another way, and red-haired people should eat another way. You'd find lots of people to fit your model, but if you can't prove that there's a metabolic gene linked to a hair colour gene, you have no scientific leg to stand on.
