Default hot flashes and possible cause

I was having lots of hot flashes prior to going on Atkins, and then, a couple weeks into Induction, they disappeared. I was so pleased, until, about a week ago they kicked in again. I couldn't blame the diet since they were there before I started, so I started researching hot flashes on the net, and BINGO! I think I found the answer.

When I started on Atkins, I began taking extra vitamin E. About a week and a half ago, I ran out, and haven't renewed my supply. I never connected the hot flashes with running out of vitamin E til just now. I'm going to start taking it again and I'll let you know what happens. I'm *only* 44 and not geneticly inclined to be menopausal based on my mother and older sisters, however, I've not had a period since the last week of Feb, so who knows.

Just thought I'd post this info for others who are experiencing power surges. Mine are coming several times an hour. I'm not complaining because I used to always be cold. But it would be nice to regulate the inner thermostat.

Hi Ellie. Know 44 is young to start menopause, but I started at 42 (yea!! bring it on!!). No history in my family either. You could be right re the vitamins, but a simple blood test will prove it once and for all. No need to put up with hot flushes (thats what we call them in Australia). This is only my opinion, but, if it is menopause, the earlier you start on corrective hormone therapy, the better for you & your heart!
Cheers...Pam

I had trouble with hot flashes that were so bad I had trouble sleeping. I started taking black cohosh, a supplement my doctor said was safe and better than starting on hormones, and it worked in DAYS!

Default It Worked!!!

After a week on 800 mg of vitamin E, my hot flashes have subsided to only one or two a day rather than three or four an hour. It took about five days to notice the difference.

I got a blood test on tuesday and waiting for the results to find out if i'm perimenopausal and to check my cholesterol post-atkins.

I take black cohosh and progest cream and no more hot flashes. I don't take estrogen.

Hi Ellie, I sent you a P.M a while back but your mailer was full, did you ever get it? I just checked at your journal, been a while since you were there, how's it going?

Yeah, i've really let my journal lag. As a writer, I run out of words on my "real" writing before I get around to personal writing, which is ironic since my first two books are about journaling.

I got down to 138.6 then crept back up to 142. I've refused to get on the scale since lest I get even more depressed. That was over a week ago. But thanks for asking.

i didn't get the PM. I think our mailboxes are way too small since I get a "full' message if there are more than 2 or 3 in my box.
