Default Carb count in herbs & spices?

Hi,

I am still looking for a book that gives the nutritional content, including the carb count for herbs, spices & things like carob & some of the things that most people don't eat on a regular basis. Can anyone help? I tried to post this in the nutrition section but for some reason it would not let me.

Thanks,
Bratina

I think you'll find that "The Nutribase Nutrition Facts Desk Reference" (Dr. Art Ulene, Avery Publishing Group) may meet your needs. It contains listings of "over 40,000 foods", and includes Calories, % Calories from Fat, Total Fat, Saturated Fat, Cholesterol, Sodium, Carbohydrates, Fiber, and Protein.

Warning: this is not going to fit in your purse! The trade-paper edition runs to nearly 950 pages and weighs about 10 lbs. I picked up an old copy (1995) in 1/2 Price Books for $8...which works fine for me.

If you need up-to-date nutritional values for the latest fast-food fads, you can pony up $17.47 (plus shipping) at Amazon for the latest edition. See:

if you have a finite list that you need to get counts for you can also look at the USDA database at
http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/cgi-bin/nut_search.pl

they list 4 entries for carob:

Carob-flavor beverage mix, powder
Carob-flavor beverage mix, powder, prepared with whole milk
Carob flour
Candies, carob

I'm not sure if fitday.com also does, but they have regular spices.

Up at the top of the page under Low Carb Tools is the USDA Database so you never have to leave this site!

Why leave when it's all here? Except to do more research and bring it back to home base?
