Question Cold Cuts

I know packaged cold cuts can have sugars in them. How about cold cuts from the deli section that are freshly sliced right there? Are they carb-free?

Thanks,

Kat

I hate to tell ya this, but processed meats are just that processed. Deli or not.

Probably the fresh turkey breast may be okay....provided it isnt the honey roasted stuff.

You may be able to ask the deli clerk to allow you to look at the label before they slice it up for you to check. Or have them look at the carbs on the label for you.

Default What about glucose?

I have been reading all the labels and some of them say 0 carbs
but yet the ingredients have corn syrup or glucose? How is this possible to be carb free? Eg; Pillers pepperoni sticks.

hi shelley,

Hmmm, that is strange. I just checked the Piller's website, and their online product nutrition information shows 1.6g carbs for 100g serving of the Pepperonetts sticks.

http://www.pillers.com/Products/products.html

Definitely a discrepancy with the package information. I wonder if maybe the count on the package is for just one stick, so that the count would be less than is required to be declared by law?? In Canada, carbs must be declared to the nearest 0.1g, whereas in the US, they can round to the nearest whole gram (that's how they get away with calling something with 0.5g as zero, such as cream, and the sweetener packets)

Default deli meats

I personally stick with "roast beef" or "turkey breast", for the reasons already stated.

Yes, I can see why you would stick to basic meats.

I think it's best to stick with the "real meat" too. There are all sorts of scary and unpronounceable other ingredients to worry about in processed meats besides sugars. Citric acid, MSG nd an overabundance of salt to name a few.

Default Roast Beef

Would a good snack be thinly slice roast beef wrapped around a slice of cheese (counting the carbs, of course)?

That's why I was wondering about cold cuts in the first place. I thought they would be a good snack with cheese.

Cool mmmmmm.....

Kat, thinly-sliced deli-roasted meats ... beef, smoked turkey breast being my favourites ... are delicious rolled around a lot of things. Fingers of swiss or other cheese is good. Or, spread thinly with cream cheese then horseradish or grainy mustard and roll up. Black forest ham (watch the carbs, a few brands are sugar- or honey-cured) is good too. Cut a dill pickle into spears, and roll around that, or sweet red or green pepper strips. Spread the meat with a little mayo first, instead of the cream cheese or mustard.

Just be sure to account for the carbs in everything

Doreen
