Default craving salty stuff...

i am on my sixth day of atkins and i am following very strictly. i drink more water than recommended and have been taking atkins supplements and additional small doses of potassium daily. all day today i have been craving salty things like crackers or potato chips. to satisfy my cravings i put a little soy sauce on some roast beef i had for lunch and some cheese and green olives in my salad. anyone else had similar experience?

You may actually be short of sodium - especially if you are drinking lots of water. If you add low salt to your food it already has potassium and sodium in the correct balance.

If you crave salt, have some. Your body may be telling you it needs it.

Crunchy, salty things have been the hardest thing for me to give up. There is a recipe in the main dishes thread in the kitchen forum for "1 taco will fill you up, guarranted!" that I like to use to make cheddar cheese crisps. Since there is lots of salt in sharp cheddar, that might satisfy that craving.

And for what it's worth, my annual blood work often reveals that I have a mild sodiium deficiency.

I usually cure that craving with pepperoni. Some people don't choose to have pepperoni because it has nitrates in it, but if you don't mind, it does the trick!! I have it with cheese melted on it, or I place the pepperoni chips on a plate and microwave them for 1 minute-they get really crispy like potato chips. Yum!! I sometimes dip then in the Atkins ketchup as well. It's a good little treat to cure my salt cravings.

Microwaved pepperoni is also good dipped in sour cream (I know, sounds weird)!

Thanks for the suggestions...

I have had to try alot of new foods since starting atkins because before I had never eaten any eggs or the variety of veggies you need to keep induction interesting. I can't say I have ever eaten pepporoni either. I used to be so bland trying to eat low cal/low fat(ex: grilled chix, a starch, same ol vegetables) and now I am experimenting with seasonings and ways of cooking different foods. I have never liked salad dressing or mayonaise, stuff like that...and this WOE lets me eat whole natural healthy foods and really taste them.

Olives help me get by and sometimes I fry some breakfast sausage. I love the cheese chips. The cheese chips and Pepperoni chips are so easy. A minute in the micro and your good to go. Enjoy!

Salt is my middle name. PMS has me eating jars of olives. Fried cheese, Salads with bacon bits and red wine vinegar, Pickles. I get beef broccoli from the chinese place...they make it with no sauce for me (not steamed, fried but using only oil) and I eat that with lots of soy sauce, hard boiled eggs with salt....

Turkey pepperoni with mozzarella cheese works for me. I will soemtiems get really bad salt cravings, but I also eat very low sodium so I just take it as a hint my body needs some more

I probably get salty cravings more then sweet.

Beacon, beacom, beacon, how can you crave salt after eating that??
Also Franks Hot sauce--gets me thru those times when I just need more flavor--basted over chicken breasts is one of my favorites!

I crave something salty every other Friday. I guess the need for salt accumulates I usually stop by this greek grocery on my way home from work, get a piece of feta cheese and have some for dinner with a cup of tea.

I know what you mean by the local/low fat thing. I've found that a lot of things I assumed I wouldn't like are really good and I don't have to feel guilty eating them
