Sugar Alcohols in Chocolate ??

What's the scoop on sugar alcohols? I bought some "sugar free" chocolate at Purdy's Chocolates (equivalent to Godiva, Laura Secord, etc.) and the hand-out literature said 23g carbs in 5 pces, but the sales lady said NET CARBS for 5 pces, if it's for the Atkins Diet, was only 1g because you don't count the carbs from the sugar alcohols (in this case in the form of Maltitol). Anyone know if this is true or not? THANKS!
