Default Eating for Life: Scientific Research Low Carb Diets a Cancer Risk?

Bill Phillips, creator of Body For Life has a new book out called Eating For Life.

An article on his site bashes low carb and high carb alike. Apparently a 3 day study of a low-calorie, very low-carb diet was found to be deficient in several vitamins. So, eat your veggies!

*snort* what were they feeding them for their carbs? Iceburg lettuce? Funny how even on 30 grams of carb per day, the only thing that I seem to come up short on vitamin and mineral wise is calcium, which is quickly erased when I get a few ounces of cheese into my diet. Otherwise, I'm usually well over my RDA of most vitamins and minerals even before I take my multivitamin.

"As more and more research surfaces illustrating the dangers of unbalanced nutritional regimens, it's becoming increasingly clearer that balanced nutrition, rich in fruits, vegetables, lean protein and high-quality carbohydrates, is the way to go."

Well that sounds like my diet. The "high-quality carbohydrates" I get are from veggies and fruit.

These articles make me so mad! Why do I keep reading them?!?!?!?!?!?!

This is just a 3 day study!

The extremely short period seems designed to give predetermind results. We all know what the body goes through the first week ti switch fuel source from sugar to fat and protein, and the withdrawl symptoms due to carb addiction.

It's like saying "don't quit smoking, as a study of 3 days on people who quit just smoking shows extreme tension and negative reactions! This leads us to conclude that quitting smoking is dangerous to your health!"

Actually, I would like to know more about this:
Quote:
carbohydrate-restrictive diets may markedly increase levels of the so-called "stress hormone" cortisol in pregnant women, thereby exposing the fetus to excess cortisol and programming lifelong hypersecretion of cortisol. Hypersecretion of cortisol, termed "hypercortisolemia," has been linked to numerous deleterious health conditions, including cognitive impairments, clinical depression, hypertension, diabetes and obesity.

I think Schwarzbein also mentioned high cortisol as being unhealthy, unfortunately I loaned out that book. Most other authors never mention it. But I suspect that if it happens that it doesn't just happen to pregnant women. Does anyone know more about this, and strategies to avoid this?

I have just put this on their message board, interesting to see what answer i get if any!

I am on low carb diet, eating on average between 8 -11 portions of vegetables and fruit a day. As you say that low carb dieters do not eat enough vegs and fruit please tell me what is enough
