Default What do they feed cows....

What do they feed cows to make them gain weight?

Grain!

When I read that in Dana Carpenter's book "How I gave up my lowfat diet and lost 40lbs". Something just clicked with me. They feed the cows grain to make them gain weight and cows eat all day. So why in the world do we need 5-6 servings of grain a day, so we can gain fast like the cows??

Anyway- its just some motivational food for thought there

It's a great thing to remind everyone about.

And what do they feed calves at first to make them gain weight? Cow's milk!

Waxy Corn. ...Waxy corn is grown primarily for its higher amylopectin content compared to normal corn. Waxy corn starch is over 99 percent amylopectin; regular corn contains 72 to 76 percent amylopectin and 24-28 percent amylose...An estimated 30 percent of waxy corn is grown for livestock feed, since its starch can be digested more easily and more completely by livestock than dent corn starch. Some tests indicate that steers make greater gains when fed waxy endosperm corn.

Amylopectin and Amylose are the two main types of Starch. Amylose is low-glycemic, while Amylopectin is extremelly high glycemic. The Glycemic Index of a starchy food is usually determined by the ratio of these 2 starches. A food that is almost entirely Amylopectin, and which has virtually no Amylose, Fiber, Fat, or Protein will be extremelly high glycemic.

That's a cute analogy, really. There's really not so much wrong with eating whole grains, though... wonder how big the cattle would get on Krispy Kreme?

As a kid my favorite "vegetable" was corn, and my mom always told me that corn was good for nothing but fattening up pigs. And turns out she was right!

Potatofree, it's funny that you mention cattle eating Krispy Kremes...I work at a magazine that deals with bull riding, and just the other day I got a photo of a bull eating right out of the Krispy Kreme box. Apparently he preferred the apple cinnamon and turned his nose (snout?) up at the plain!

When I was in grade school in health class they made us read an article that summarized an experiment where researchers had 2 groups of mice. One group ate a regular diet that should have been healthy for mice. The other group was allowed to eat only candy such as snickers bars, and water. Of course the healthy mice stayed healthy but I recall being amazed that the candy fed mice became surly and LOST weight. I thought to myself, how can junk food help you lose weight? Now, 20 something years later I am not amazed any more. I am thinking that the mice were surly because they decided not to eat the candy and they were hungry. I just can't come up with any other explaination.
