Default Low carb and pregnancy

Over the holidays I found out that I was pregnant. 5 weeks now to be exact. I combed the Atkins site and the net looking for information and it seems that most lcers have switched to Atkins maintenance levels which is what I am going to do.

I plan to keep my carbs around 75g to start. I plan to add more veggies, some fruit, milk and possibly some whole grains. But here is where I get so overwhelmed. What fruit is better. I know berries, but what other fruit? Which grains are better?

Any other low-carbers out there who have been through a pregnancy care to share your tips??

Hi Cre8tivgrl!

Congrats on the impending new arrival!

As far as fruits go, the lower the glycemic index (GI) the better. You might want to do some research on the net or get a book that lists the GI of different fruits. Bananas and dried fruits are usually very high. Fruits like berries, melons, peaches, oranges (maybe half at a time), apples (again, maybe half at a time) would be good bets. Fresh is always better than canned, but frozen would work in a pinch too as long as there are no added sugars.
As far as grains, go for the least processed possible, wild rice or brown rice would be good choices, but keep the amounts small.
Instead of adding milk, how about some plain yogurt? Less carbs, but still lots of calcium. You can even add some Splenda and berries to it yourself.
You can also keep your carbs up a bit by using some of the veggies that are a bit higher in carbs like sweet potato and winter squashes.
I think if you stay away from the highly processed things like bread, flour, sugar and pasta you'll probably be fine.
Happy baby!

Congragulations! I hope you have a great nine months!

Regarding adding carbs back in I'd reccomend that you add grains such as quiona back in as it tastes lovely and is higher protein than most grains. It's also tastier than rice I think.

Thanks you two! I do agree, that just making sure the whites are gone from my diet is a good step to start with.

I have never heard of quiona. What is it? Some suggested that I add Kashi. ?? I will check that out at the store tomorrow.

Quiona can be bought in any healthfood store. It is as high carb as any other grain but IMO it tastes nicer than other wholegrains and it contains protein which is unusual for a grain.
