Default Breastfeeding and Atkins

Does anyone know if breastfeeding and being on induction is safe. My baby is 2 months now and I want to start losing weight and I did the Atkins diet with some success before but would now like to start again.

Hi Sarah,

According to Dr Atkins, women who are pregnant or breast feeding should not undergo any of the weight loss phases of Atkins.

So I would strongly advise against doing Induction while still breast feeding. You can eat low carb, just stay in a maintenance phase, and if you find yourself losing weight, increase your carbs. Then once the little one is weaned, you can get going with your weight loss.

Sarah, Your baby want breastfeed forever so just enjoy that time while it lasts. I breastfed for 15 mths and started the low carb diet just a few months afterward. I did read from another thread also that maintenance would be okay during breastfeeding but check with your baby's pediatrician first. This is a special time for you and baby and TRUST ME , the baby will wean before you know it. So again, JUST ENJOY your time together.

The concerns against strict LC while pregnant or breastfeeding seem to be related to the appetite suppression which can occur with ketosis. Women need to ensure extra calories and sufficient nutrients to sustain their own and their baby's health.

I've also read testimonial accounts from some women who state that ketosis changed the taste of their breastmilk, and this caused fussing and in some cases their babies actually rejected their milk due to the altered taste.

Maintenance levels of carbs are still way below the standard Food Pyramid, and should be helpful to control cravings and stabilize weight while nursing.
