Question Russell Stover Low Carb candy ?'s

I found these candy bars by Russell Stover and on the front it says it has 0.5 net carbs per piece . When I looked at the back nutrition table it said...

Total Carbs 28.2g
(-) Fiber 0.5g
(-) Maltitol 27.2

Net Effective Carbs 0.5g.

Is this correct or what the heck is Maltitol? and is it going to set me back?

It might stall you a little bit, Malitol will make you have to use the rest room alot!! I have those maybe once in a while for a little treat! But, I did stall for a week cause I had to many! But, they are good!

Maltitol is a sugar alcohol. They say they aren't to be counted because you don't digest them, but it's starting to look like that is not the case. Look around here for a thread called "Making a case to count sugar alcohols" or something similar to that.

There are lots of threads on maltitol in the Atkins forum.

Basically between half to 2/3 of maltitol is absorbed and while it wont spike your blood sugar, you will still get the carbs from it.

Many people including myself count some or all of the carbs of sugar alcohols. I count half of all maltitol carbs so for me, for example the candy would have around 14g carbs since thats the amount that will get digested.

A lot of people do have a problem with them.. Not only the bathroom issue but yes it will stall your weight loss... Take it from someone who's been there done that.. It won't hurt as maybe a monthly treat but if you are just starting out I suggest staying away from them completely to get your body used to eliminating the sugar cravings..

Just a note about the Russell Stover's sugar-free chocolate candies .. most contain partially hydrogenated oils, which are transfats. Something else to consider besides the maltitol.

Picked up a pack of Russel Stover chocolate and caramel candy pecans at an AMC theater over the weekend. They are labeled as sugar free, but as others have pointed out above they are loaded with sugar alcohol/maltitol. They were delicious and included six, large individually wrapped candies for $2.50 (cheap by typical movie prices). I ate three candies. This was way too much malitol for my body to handle.

Hi...
I've been somewhat doing the Atkins diet since around April 26th and have lost 14 lbs. I tried Atkins last year around the same time of the year and lost approx. 17 lbs. I find that I am having better luck this time around due to the introduction of so many new products on the market - especially the Russell Stover candies,Carb Smart ice cream bars and low carb wraps (5 grams each). It has made my eating choices much more broad than it was a year ago and I am still losing weight. I may only lose a pound a week, but who cares as long as I'm losing. As long as I have the above mentioned items, I have been able to stick to the rest of the diet the way it should be done. I notice when I'm at a birthday party, I don't drool when cake is served the way I used to do. I really don't feel deprived. Is there anyone else out there who has done the same thing? Any thoughts from anyone?????

I believe the reason they are listed as being .5 net carbs is b/c on the back of the bag the serving size is for three pieces. ??
