hi there,

Phase 1 and 2 allow up to 75 optional calories per day for "sweet treats" including sugar-free fruit-flavored pops or fudgesicles, pure cocoa powder (which you can mix with lowfat cream cheese or ricotta and add your own sweetener), sugar-free hot chocolate powder, sugar-free hard candy, diet gelatin and diet sodas. In Phase 2 you may add small amounts of real semisweet chocolate and sugar-free puddings made with lowfat milk, as long as you stay under 75 calories.

The problem with the no-sugar added / low-carb chocolate bars is that they're very high in fat calories. And the fat is often saturated type such as dairy or palm/coconut oil (which are healthy as long as they're not hydrogenated however South Beach frowns on saturated fat) .. or else the fat is hydrogenated vegetable oil of some kind usually soybean. Hydrogenated fat = transfat, and that is unhealthy no matter what diet plan you're on

Twin mom,

I hate to say it since you love them but I think you will hear this a lot: Keep phase 1 squeeky clean, meaning no "Frankenfood" (man-made stuff), i.e. no bars, shakes, snack things of any kind. Just meat, fish, eggs, veggies, oil.

Phase 2 is when you can start experimenting with what works for you and what not. Many many here find that any of the bars slow their weight loss, and phase 2, but not 1, is when you can try out whether you are lucky and use them and still loose weight.

Now is the time to get your body clean and moving, and that is done best with purer foods.

twinmomma, I don't know if it is allowed on South Beach diet, but if you can find it in a store, Canfield's Diet Fudge soda is great for curing chocolate cravings - has no calories or sodium. It does, though, have Aspartame, so I only drink it once in a while. Hope this helps.

I have found that the sugar free fudgsicles really took away my craving for sweets. Also, sugar free jello is a great treat/dessert.
