Default Want to do Atkins but need more structure? Vegan or vegetarian? Do Protein Power

Although on Atkins I picked up the book Protein Power which is a ketogenic diet based on Atkins. It has a more structured way of counting grams by using food charts for you to combine foods and net carb count lists for you to choose your carbs from. It is based on the fact that for you NOT to lose muscle while dieting, you need to get your body's minimum protein intake to feed your muscle. So first you calculate your mean body mass and find your minimum protein level and divide your 3 meals a day by this amount. You add protein snacks to this, have unlimited fat (olive oil recommended), and your carbs in Phase I Intervention are at 30 g. It also tells Vegans and Vegetarians how to do this diet. Phase II is 55 g carb. From the beginning you may have: 1/4 cp blackberries with 2.9 carbs and 1/4 cp carrots with 3.0 carbs. Otherwise, it looks like Atkins.

What I love about the book is that it gives invaluable information about the ketogenic diet that has helped me do Atkins better.

It has a "Questions Commonly Asked" that answers:
What should I do if I feel dizzy or light-headed?
I used to be able to lose weight easilly, but now I have a difficult time even getting the first few pounds off. Why?
I have hit a plateau. What can I do to get things going?
I've just started the program and I feel extremely fatigued. Why?

The assessing your risk quiz concerning glucose/insulin has the telling question: have you ever had diabetes during pregnancy?

The book also tells which people should avoid egg yolk and red meat NOT because of cholesterol but because of an allergic reaction to arachidonic acid in these foods and he shows you how to tell if you are sensitive to it.

Chapter 12 is an excellent discussion of the eicosanoids (important to know) which has an indepth discussion on all fats and which are best.

Whether you decide to do the Protein Power diet or not, I recommend the book for everyone on Atkins.
