Hi there. Just wanted to share something that happened to me last night that I can't seem to get out of my head...
I was talking on the phone with a casual acquaintance last night (she is trying to get a job at my place of work and I'm trying to find a new job..yada yada yada) so we were talking about job vacancies in our area and all of a sudden she comes out with:

HER: "OH, I know of a place that would be PERFECT for you....Pennington's."
ME: "Oh? What is Pennington's???"
HER: "You know, the FAT LADY clothing store??? ha ha ha They're opening one up in our mall..."
ME: "I've never heard of it..."
HER: "REALLY???"
ME: "Uh, really.....I don't WEAR plus sized clothing, just so you know...."
HER: "Oh, well I guess you're not THAT fat. ha ha ha"

Now I laughed the whole thing off but just knowing that she sees me as a "Fat Chic" was really a blow to my self esteem. Now obviously I know I have weight to lose which is why I started this WOE but I'm 5'8" and weigh currently about 167 and wear a 12/14 -- which is not obese! Just wondering what some of you would have said or done in that situation? It just really caught me by surprise. (and just for the record she's no slim sally herself!) I know I shouldn't care what others think, but it bothers me anyways!!!

Too bad you were on the phone, because in person a sharp smack to her forehead, or just a one-finger salute, would have been an appropriate comeback.

No need for a comeback for people like that. As Alina said, there will come a day when that nasty cow will be VERY jealous of you. Just file her comments away for a day when you're struggling with this WOE -- I find that comments like hers (comments that make me mad as HELL, in other words) give me a lot of willpower in weak moments.

Just put her comments down to "foot in mouth" disease, Cappy. Forget it, she's not worth your attention. Some people's only talent is spewing garbage every time they open their mouths.

Sometimes direct and honest and genuine dialog can be the most effective. I would have said to her something like "I can't believe you just said that to me. I don't believe we know each other well enough for you to comment on my body."

I'm with manucpa on this one. A direct response would probably be more effective than stooping to her level with some comeback.
Then again...living well (and thinner than her!) is always the best revenge.

I guess they'll drive you crazy if you let 'em. I'm not often speechless, just ask my DH, but a few months ago a "harmless" comment left me dumbfounded and quite unable to respond.

My sister-in-law, who had recently lost a great deal of tonnage on weight watchers, remarked that she was getting rid of her size 16 blouses. I said, "oh, you can save some for me", as I often wear loose, oversize tops around the house. She said, "Oh surely you'll be wanting to lose more weight, won't you?"

Try as I may, with all the "consider the source" and so forth, I just can't shake her comment either. I suppose the "other" way to look at is in spite of the hurt & audacity of such a thoughtless remark, it's another little motivation to keep doing the right thing ... [besides, I just KNOW she's going to gain her weight back .... and I AIN'T - so there!!]

The world is full of idiots, we simply have to rise above them!

I wonder if she is intimidated by you, or jealous that you have a job in the company that she wants and is trying to put you down to make herself feel better? Whatever the motivation, it is better to cut someone like that out of your circle of friends if being hurtful like that comes so easily for her.

You should have asked her to pick up an application for you the next time she's there shopping.

ha ha ha! I love everyone's comments! Thanks a bunch! I feel much better about the whole thing now...she's not worth getting all upset over...like I said I barely even know her! And you know what, you just might be right about her being intimidated by me....ha ha ha!

Gosh....a casual aquaintance? Easy to see why she is that and not a friend. Amazing isn't it? Well good for you for not feeding on her comments....I have to admit....if she said that to me....I probably wouldn't have been able to let it pass....so more power to you girl! You are a far better person than she is or ever will be.
