Default Lactitol and lactose intolerance

Reading the thread about the movie theatres made me wonder... Do people with a lactose intolerance react to lactitol with the same symptoms? Are portion controlled amounts of maltitol, perhaps, easier than lactitol on folks with a lactose intolerance? I'm curious because several years ago I developed an intolerance to milk products and then it seemed go away when I went to soy milk for all my milk uses and only occasionally would seldom have other dairy products. At that point I could handle them without symptoms. Now I've gone LC and am still using soy quite a bit but have gone to real cream and butter quite frequently. If lactitol causes problems with lactose intolerance people then maybe I should be being careful with my use of it or at least not have it in close proximity to other lactose containing products. From what I remember reading somewhere it doesnt have the same effect, but I am not certain on that. I can say that lacitol has a horrible horrible laxative effect on me and the Hersheys PB cups have hydrogenated oils in them anyway, so I dont eat them.

Maltitol while never having that strong of an effect on me aside from a little gassy knocks me out of ketosis right away, because more than half of it is digested like sugar. I think only 20% of Lacitol is digested which is a huge difference.

Either way I count half the carbs of the sugar alcohols as my carbs for the day and that keeps the amount I eat if any in check.

I was highly lactose intolerant until I started eating Atkins, and now I enjoy cheeses, cream cheese, and heavy cream in my coffee with no problems at all. My SIL had the same experience.

Don't know if this addresses your question but I was astonished to find out I was apparently carb intolerant, not lactose intolerant. Perhaps things have changed for you?

I am lactose intolerent to varying degrees. Lactol is one of the few sugar alcohols I can handle though. Malitol and sorbitol give me massive bowl problems as well as some very bad gas. Lacitol and the new erytherol (sp) only give me a moderate case of gas. Still makes me unpleasant to be around, but not as gunt renchingly sick and in pain.

I have to give a 100% ditto to you LadyBelle. I can not drink milk at all. But I can eat solid dairy with no problem. I can handle Splenda sweetners, in small doses. The other sweetners, I must stay away from or I'm in the bathroom all day!

Interesting. I know that I can drink cream in my decaf and even eat lc ice cream now without getting that painful gassy stomach ache. I still get sinus headaches though when I have too many dairy products. So when I go overboard it's Sudafed city. Oh well, I know since I started this WOE I haven't been sick as much. My allergies have been better too, although that could be due to the shots I'm on since I just recently made it to my maintenance level. I know though that EVERY year I get sick with the awful bronchitis bug right near my birthday and have to up my asthma meds. This year my kids got sick with it and everyone else got it and I escaped it. My allergist/immunologist was totally impressed! I told him I thought it was that I didn't have all the sugar dragging down my immune system. It sure is less stressful knowing that I don't have to worry about getting sick every time my kids get sick now. Annie
