Default What supplements are you taking?

I'm taking a multi-vitamin, calcium, E, Atkins Essential Oils - what am I missing? I considered those husks (psilium?) but then (hurray!!) regularity returned...are they a good idea anyway?

And how about the ones that jump start your metabolism? They scare me a little - sound too much like "diet pills", and not very natural.

I'd love to hear what y'all are taking & how much.

Default Enough

I think you are taking quite enough. The only time on Atkins that you might need much of anything is Induction. After that a single multivitamin should suffice; perhaps some extra potassium since we are passing so much water through us. My motto: "Keep it simple!"

Good Luck!

Since so little formal empirical research has been done on Atkins, and since there SO many ways of "doing Atkins," ranging from high to low nutritional benefit, I tend to use more supplements than others may choose to use. I especially tend to watch electrolytes (calcium, magnesium, potassium) carefully, as mineral depletion seems to make my workouts hard.

I take extra calcium (100 mg), magnesium (200 mg), potassium (200 mg), chromium picolinate (200 mg), vitamin C (1000 mg), vitamin E (400 IU), flaxseed oil, fish oil, L-carnitine, Coenzyme Q-10, and a multivitamin. I realize this sounds like a lot, and it is, but I figure the only thing I KNOW I'm always getting is protein and beta carotene (from all my dark green leafy veggies, broccoli, etc.).

I am sure that others do just fine with little or no supplementation, but since I'm still pretty new to this WOE, I prefer to start out being sure I have what I need, then taper to the bare essentials later.

I'm taking quite a few too, though I am defintiely trying to stay close to induction level for as long as possible (5th week currently).

I take a multi-vitamin, flax seed oil, C, Chromium Picolinate, B-complex, Calcium/Zinc/Magnesium, and Potassium.

I added potassium because I was starting to feel a bit dizzy and "not quite there" even though I was wide awake and feeling energetic. It made a difference right away.

I added the B-complex because it contains Folic Acid, which is a supplement added to flour, that we nomally get without even thinking about it when we eat bread and baked goods. Folic Acid and B-vitamins are complimentary so they are normally packaged together.

I also recently read that while Flax seed is a great source of Omega-3s, they are not as accessible to your body as when they come from Fish oil. Anyone know anything about this?

Default supplements...

It varies, but for now, I am taking a Protein Powder, usually 2 Multi-vit/mineral taps a day, Flax seed oil, Glutamine(between 4-10g a day), Zinc tabs-2 per day, Vit. C-2 a day, protein bars when not on inductions phases, and when needed Melatonin.
To some this may seem like alot, but, I am a competitive Weight Lifter and also play Minor-League football, so my activity is through the roof.

I started Atkins yesterday and I had a major headache and felt lightheaded. I was already taking flaxseed oil and vitamin C and a multi vitamin that had iron in it.

Today I bought potassium and another multi vitamin because I thought it had no iron. When I got home and opend the multi vitamin and was rereading I saw iron. How dumb of me!!

I feel kinda of like yesterday now except no headache yet.

What else whould I take besides potassium?

Default potassium

i often feel a bit dizzy (and i don't think it's just because i'm a blonde ) and sometimes a bit nauseous. i'm wondering if extra potassium would help this and if this is "normal" on a lc diet.
thanks!

I've never been a fanatic about supplements before this; all I can see to take is a daily multi without iron. My own feeling is that it's better for my body to try and get my daily minerals and such through diet rather than supplementation, but YMMV.

Since I'm on daily BP meds, potassium loss is an issue for me. Before Atkins I was drinking tomato juice every day and eating an extra banana once every 2-3 days, and was avoiding the potassium loss issues with that. I tried a potassium supplement before, and felt the yo-yo effect; the warm flushes in the morning as I got it all at once, and leg cramps at night after it wore off. I found that absorbing it through diet worked a lot better for me.
