Question How is the thyroid activity and weight loss related?

I'm taking synthroid for my underactive thyroid and i just started the atkins diets. I noticed that when I stop taking my synthroid, my ketostix was only pink. Now I'm on the second week of the diet and I have been taking my pills for 4 days now and my ketostix are dark lavander.
what is the biochemical connection between ketosis and thyroid?

thanks

That is a really good question, and I am not sure I can completely answer it. What the thyroid does is release hormones that control cellular metabolism-how fast your metabolism works. More than likely if your metabolism is slowed down due to an inadequate amount of T4 and T3 (the two hormones made by the thyroid) that also means that the amount of fat burning is slowed down. HOWEVER, any change in the ketostix means you are in ketosis-many people here believe that the darker color on the ketostix means you are dehydrated.

I find my thyroid medication DOES have a impact on my loss (as it does effect your metabolism) and my ketosis state. I am not a scientist but it DOES relate to loss. BUT you should take your thyroid meds at LEAST a month before you make any conclusions. TAKE YOUR MEDS EVERYDAY!! On an empty stomach and at the same time of day. If you are new to thyriod the best advice is patience..It has taken 2 years to get my meds close to right. So make sure and get tested regularly!!

Take care and GOOD LUCK!!
