I believe he means to just pull your legs straight to your chest and allow gravity to have its effect on your abs. Whatever angle he has with his legs in the photos, he keeps that same angle as he brings his legs to his chest. You won't have to pull towards the ceiling at all, gravity will have all of the effect on the abs you'll need for this exercise.
