Post Anyone did a meat fast as a kickstart?

Hi guyz,

I understand that a meat fast is more commonly used to break through a plateau. But I'm wondering if anyone used it for a kickstart? Is it recommended?

it's not a meat diet, it's just a protein/fat no carb one.

I've never heard of a meat fast, just a fat fast. And no, it's not recommended as a kickstart. It's recommended only for those who have stuck to the program *very strictly* and have gone weeks with no weight or inch loss; ie people who are very highly resistant to weight loss. An example might be someone on a medication that promotes weight gain. The fat fast isn't very safe, and it's no fun.

You'll do fine on regular Atkins!

Thanks for the replies!

A meat fast does exist. I got the following excerpt from the website http://www.lowcarbluxury.com/beginners.html

If you want to take a "kick-start" step, I recommend the "Meat Fast." It's easier to do than Atkins' "Fat Fast" and seems to work just as well. For 3-5 days, eat nothing but Meat! You can have any red meat, fish or fowl with no breading or sauces and minimal seasonings. Fry in olive oil or clarified butter, or roast or bake them. No dairy, no cheese, no veggies. You can have up to 2 eggs per day and drink lots and lots and lots of water. But no soda, no tea, no coffee, no low-carb specialty products. You can have mayonnaise and mustard.

You can make this more palatable this way: Before starting the diet, make up a variety of meats to have on hand as you need them:

Roast a turkey breast and have it sliced and ready in the fridge.

Ditto for a pork roast, and/or a beef roast.

Make a batch of deviled eggs
(Remember you can have up to 2 per day.)

Have chicken and tuna salad ready. Maybe crab salad.

Fry some bacon slices to snack on.

Make up some fried chicken wings to grab from the fridge.
(These can be breaded in crushed pork rinds, lightly seasoned,
and fried in olive oil.)

If you keep a variety of meats ready to go, you won't feel like you're eating just one thing day after day and the 3 days or so go by rather quickly. I have almost always seen a stall break by doing this.

What do you guyz think?

Try it if you want. Unless you let yourself get hungry, it isn't likely to hurt you. You might get the carb withdrawal symptoms like headaches, etc. It's your body. If it gets too tough, stop and go back to normal low-carbing.

I've kind of been doing that, but not exactly, and it seems okay to me.

I hate yesterday
2 eggs, 2 bacon
macadamia nuts
1 6 oz burger
1/2 avocado
6 oz. chicken
6 oz. wine

Meat seems awfully dry without the fat.

I think you don't have to omit the fat? It's stated that you can still fry the meat in olive oil or butter.

Today's my third day of induction and I can feel my energy coming back!

I will probably experiment with the meat fast for the next few days. Hope I can get through the days without my coffee!

Ah, okay. I had never heard of it. But I wouldn't want to try it. Why? One word: Constipation!!! Personally, I would include those veggies. It's very little carbohydrate and there's virtually nothing in them that would cause a stall.

...but eliminating dairy, caffeine, artificial sweeteners and LC specialty products *is* a good way to kickstart. Good luck!

I think you should do induction by the book first. Then, if that doesn't work, do Atkins KISS with no fake foods or artificial sweetners and very little cheese. If you are still stuck then try a one day meat fast.

I have occassionally had meat only days in the past but I feel better if I have some salad or spinich along with eat least one meal a day.

I've tried meat fasting for 3 or 4 days once in a while to break plateaus. It doesn't seem to be any more or less effective than keeping a very strict eye on the carbs in my experience.

I think it is a very bad idea to use it at the start of a diet. Your body will go through enough shock being deprived of most of its carbs as it is.

Also, as stated above, you won't be able to go to the toilet for days. Its better to keep eating some salad and vegetables.

I agree with the others, why consider it at all if you are just starting induction. You are kickstarting already, nothing to kickstart at all...just do the plan as indicated. If later down the road you need that "jump" then deal with it now.

Actually, as far as constipation goes, I haven't had any at all, just smaller amounts. I've never felt better. I'm wondering if there is something else going on with my digestive system that I haven't been aware of. For now, I'm sticking to the protein and fat and a smidge of veggies if they appear for some strange reason.

I was considering to add psyllium husk to the meat fast initially..But you guys are probably right, maybe the normal induction will do for now. I was just too impatient to lose all the weight gained

Can't thank all of you enough for the valuable advices and suggestions!

The meat fast you described sounds almost exactly like the Doctor's Quick Weight Loss Diet, otherwise known as the Stillman diet, after the doctor who wrote the book back in the 60's. I think the only foods you were allowed on his program were meats, eggs, and cottage cheese.
