Default Potassium, Morton Lite, Nu-Salt

Hi all,

I'm a salt shaker guy. You know, the one in a restaurant who reaches for the shaker BEFORE tasting the food.

And I know too much sodium is bad in a lot of ways in addition to causing water retention. Of course, if you're drinking lots and lots of water, it flushes sodium out of your system, along with a lot of other things.

Posters frequently mention the need for adequate potassium. My question is, what about Morton Lite? On the label it lists sodium at 290 mg, and potassium at 340 mg.

Also, someone stayed in my apartment for a couple of days while I was gone and left behind a little (3 oz) container of Nu-Salt, a salt substitute. The shaker was about empty, but I got a taste. A little salty-flavor. (Maybe a bit of metallic tang.) The ingredient is potassium chloride, with 530 mg of potassium. (Oh, the price sticker was stuck to it: $1.89.) What about this?

I know perhaps some self-discipline is called for, but can I still reach for the salt shaker if I use one of these?

Would use of Morton Lite (much cheaper) be considered a potassium supplement?

I use the Morton Lite. I thought it was a good idea because in every shake you are getting only half the salt. It could be considered a potassium suppliment, however, you should not be ingesting, even with Lite, enough to make a difference. Remember, sodium will cause you to retain water, and increase blood pressure. The Lite tastes good but keep those "shakes" to a minimum. It is something you must learn to control to succeed.

Hi Arrow,

I use No Salt, in preference to taking more tablets.

Morton Lite is definitely better than using plain old sodium salt, but if you are still in Induction I would suggest switching to the Nu Salt. The price is reasonable after all!

I use Morton instead of regular salt. It took me a while to get used to the taste, but I actually prefer it over table salt now.

Regular Morton salt contains sugar (dextrose), so be sure to double check the ingredients on any variations that they make.

Thanks, folks.

Glad I am using Morton Lite, but I think I'll pick up some Nu Salt the next jaunt to the market.

Is there ANYTHING out there they haven't figued out how to put sugar in?
