Default Fitday confusion

I am confused !! I have been using Fitday and have found items that don't seem right. If I say I ate 8 oz (cooked) of ground beef , I get one value. If I say 1 cup cooked ( which is 8 oz right??) I get a different value. What's up with this? shouldn't they be the same? I found this when I was doing raspberries also. help the mathetically disabled here--what am i doing wrong?

The only thing I can think of is that one is measured by weight and the other by volume. That they are both called ounces... well, sucks.

Exactly, Meeker. The 8 oz that make up a cup are fluid ounces; those that make up 1/2 a lb are weighted ounces. A quarter pounder would weight 4 oz but wouldnt necessarily take up a half a measuring cup.

Thanks for the response. So I should use the ounces when dealing with the ground beef and raspberries rather than the cup. It is silly for them to have a unit of measurement that is not appropriate for the food - ground beef not being fluid and all.
On a slightly different note, I put my pork rinds in Fitday and had to take a deep breath when I saw the calories. There is certainly no free lunch- or snack for that matter. I will have to watch myself when I have the munchies - I have a generous caloric allowance but I can't spend 800 of them on pork rinds.

Cat, you do not have a 'caloric allowance' you have a carb allowance and that's it. Do not become calorie obsessive. If you think fitday is going to result in this, stop using it now! At 188 lbs you should be eating a minimum 1800 calories a day. The 10 - 12 times your body weight rule is for minumum basic needs; at 190 lbs I personally would need to eat over 3358 calories to meet what I expend on BMR, activities and lifestyle. I doubt you can eat that many pork rinds

Nat,
You do not eat that many calories though, so I am just wondering, is it because BFL is different then just the low carbing?

Nope, it's cause with 6 meals kept to about 300 calories this is all I can shove into my mouth Smaller meals more frequently is making it harder and harder to eat more - I get full so much faster now. I think it's the protein; with 150 - 180g of it a day finding 'room' in my tummy for more food often isnt easy. I've resorted to macadamia nuts to help make sure I satisfy my BMR which is 1630 calories a day; 3358 calories is not BMR, it's more what you'd call "maintenance weight". i.e. In theory I would have to eat more than 3358 calories to gain weight.

Thanks for the information. Now I understand it better. Pretty soon, you are going to disappear on us with how fast you are losing, I admire your determination and work and planning you have put into this.

Default caloric allowance

This is the first week that I have looked at my caloric intake which is how I discovered how high the pork rinds are. I am not restricting it but I am aware that I am aiming for 1850-2300 generally. That's why I said I have to be aware of how much of those i eat. If I eat 800 calories ( or more !!) of them ( which is easy for me to do) then I am either not eating other things like protein and veggies or I am eating all of the above and at some point, too many calories is simply going to impede weight loss.
If I eat alot of them , it is not because I am hungry but rather I'm eating compulsively. I am trying to be aware of my actions and to find other ways of dealing with things rather than mowing through a bag of rinds.
I am enjoying the other effects of this WOL but the weight is the still the reason I am embarking on this WOL.

Cool pork rinds ROCK!!

COMPARISON

2 oz Pringles plain potato chips --- and we all know how FEW chips that is --- has: 320 calories, 2g incomplete protein, 30g carbs and 22g fat (transfat)

4 oz (112g) cooked lean ground beef has: 302 calories, 27.5g protein, 0 carbs and 21g fat.

A whole 2 oz (60g) bag of plain pork rinds has: 308 calories, 30g complete protein, ZERO carbs and only 20g fat (all-natural fat, not hydrogenated transfat )

Maybe this will helpt to put things in perspective

Doreen

Actually a few days of high calories is good, Cat. Keep that in mind. Many people purposely "zig zag" calories in attempts to keep the body confused and guessing. I've found that after a few days of high fat and high calorie I actually lose MORE weight rather than the opposite. It's a tough concept to wrap your brain around, I know. Just keep in mind that going over 2300 calories wont spell doom. If you make use of Fitday.com check out the page called "activities"; you'll see your caloric requirements based on BMR, lifestyle and activities (if you've entered any) The grand total might surprize you.
