Default How do you calculate for cooked bacon?

The nutritional info on the back of the package shows (for 3 slices uncooked):

Calories 361g (120 per slice)
Protein 6.7g
Fat 37g (poly 2.9g, Mono 18g, Sat 16g)
Cholesterol 35mg
Carbs .3g
Sodium 360mg
Potassium 130 mg

I entered the above into Fitday as a custom food months ago, but today I decided to check out Subway's nutritional info and see what the numbers are for the bacon and tomato wrap I've been eating lately (thought I'd enter it into fitday, as well). Surprise! Surprise! They're showing the 2 slices of bacon as only being 40 calories. Is there that much difference between raw and cooked? I know there's some difference between brands, but 100 calories per slice?

Anyone know how to calculate for cooked bacon?

Hmmm... part of the difference would be that when you cook bacon, a lot of the fat drips off, so what you're left with is a lot smaller than what was raw. The thickness of strips will vary from brand to brand, too, so Subway's is probably very thin (to save a few bucks, no doubt...)

I looked at fitdays default for bacon, smoked or cured, cooked 1 thin slice

It lists as

Calories 28
Fat 2.46
Cholesterol 4.25
Sodium 79.8
Potassium 24.3
Carbs 0.0295
protein 1.52

So it seems if subways is taking one medium slice and cutting it in half to make 2 or using 2 very thin slices 40 cal is entirely possible.

I used to eat a brand that was 50 cal for 2 slices cooked I think it was a low sodium brand.

It's kinda silly that they put the uncooked calories on the package though, I don't know anyone who eats raw bacon??????

So....the more you cook it, the lower the calories. And....being a "maximum crispy" baconeer, it appears that all those days when I thought I was eating 1500 calories, they were really at 1200 or below...way too few for me.

Hmmmm...no weight loss for months. Stalled by bacon?! That's got to be a new one!

Sure is great having you guys around when I have these dumb questions. Thanks!

Bacon gets a bad rap, IMNSHO

3 average slices of cooked bacon have a similar nutrient profile to one ounce of natural cheddar cheese.

Energy ... 107 cal
total Fat ... 9.2g
cholesterol ... 22mg
total Carb ... 0.2g

I posted more details about this previously .. here.

My great problem with bacon isn't fat, it's the SALT. Most national brands of bacon also have a lower salt version .. and happily these also seem to have less sugar carbs too .. The caveat is that these have a shorter shelf life, so eat up!! Or, cook the whole pkg at once and freeze in portions which can be quickly thawed for eating.

Another lowfat brainwashing myth debunked! Bacon is NOT fattening. Sheesh, it's hard to get rid of those old messages. Wonder what other hidden messages are still lurking in my subconcious?

Hey, Doreen, any chance you could move that thread to "Hot Links"? Sure wish it had been up front when I started this woe in July 2002.
