My husband and I have just started the Atkins diet after reading an article in the Sydney paper last week. 2 weeks into induction and we are both about 3.5-4 kg down. Another 10 kg to go.

One question I do have is when you have ketones in your urine how do you know whether you're burning the fat your are eating or the fat have stored?

Hi Donna,

Welcome to yet another Aussie!

Have you visited our Oz/NZ forum yet? I'd recommend it if you haven't already checked it out. You'll find help with various local questions there.

I guess the short answer is that you don't...straight away.

I reeeeaally think that the ketostix are a waste of time and money. Fat loss is far more important than changing the colour of a little piece of plastic.
[Rant over. ]

Okay, you are presumably burning stored fat as you've lost 4 kg in 2 weeks. But it is possible to show a positive ketone test after eating a fatty meal, drinking alcohol or if you are dehydrated.

All the best to you, Donna. Hope to "see" more (or less? ) of you around the forum.

Rosebud
