Default Why is caffine bad for us???

Hello,

I know caffine is bad for us and specifically for us on this WOL. I was never much of a coffee or soda drinker, so quitting caffine wasn't a problem for me.

However DH is also on Atkins with me and was and still is a BIG diet soda drinker. Several a day!! I want him to stop, but I also want to give him some good reasons reason to stop. Saying "it's bad for you" doesn't seem like enough.

Can you guys please help me? What can I tell my husband so he quits, or at least cuts down.

Thanks

1) Caffiene dehydrates you so it increases the effect already present in this type of diet. If you consume caffiene you need to increase your water intake along with it to help counter the effect.

2) Insulin. Caffiene does/will trigger insulin release in some people. This can make a huge difference in causing people to stall out on weight loss.

The insulin response that some (although not all, it seems) people get is the biggest reason to avoid caffeine besides the dehydration that caffeine can cause as well as the negative effects on your nervous system (jittery/nervousness, insomnia) and cardiovascular system (increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, vasoconstriction). An insulin response can cause you to be hungry soon after you drink something with caffeine in it and could cause you to go for something you shouldn't have if nothing low carb happens to be around when the munchies hit you. I went caffeine-free for about a month but it didn't seem to make much of a difference for me. I now have my regular coffee; (one or two mugs a day) and that's about it. More than that or too late in the day and I get insomnia. Funny...coffee never used to affect me that way. I could drink a whole pot of coffee right before bed when I was 20 and sleep like a baby. Ah, the joys of getting older.

Why not just switch to caffeine free soda? They make caffeine free diet coke and pepsi, plus diet root beer, orange, etc is usually caffeine free... just be sure he cuts back on caffeine slowly to avoid withdrawl headaches.
