Question walking / running

Please bear with me if these questions have been answered before.
Do the muscles used when walking respond in the same way when running ?
Also I have read that when a body has been used to doing one form of exercise for an extended period it needs to be challenged in order to kick start weight loss ect. So is there a difference between walking and running other then intensity?
Also what would be an extended period?
Hope this all makes sense.
Regards Karni

Good questions - as far as intensity there is a certain point when it is actually easier to run than to maintain a fast walk. And yes, the body does adapt to the same old work out routines. Not sure what an extended time would be - I guess you have to be the judge of that. I generally do the same things for a week or two at a time then move on to something else.
