'sugar-free' can be a deceptive term. Sometimes it means that fructose or sugar alcohols (which for most people may as well be sugars) are the sweetener.
In hypserinsulemic people, any sweet taste can trigger a surge of insulin (even if you'd spit out the food), which would stop fat-burning, trigger cravings.
Tell DH to try to eliminate all artificial sweeteners. Veggies will start tasting very sweet, the pattern that resulted in overweight in the first place will be broken, and there will be no health risks from dangers of artificial sweeteners.
