Angry Birth control pills, prozac, and weight gain!!!!

I am a 43 year old female and have been on birth control pills for numerous years. About 14 months ago I had a major depressive episode and was placed on prozac. During these 14 months, I have gain about 25 pound and it doesn't seem to want to come off. Do you think there is a correlation between the weight gain, reisitance to lose and the two medications.

If you have any knowledge or experience in the area please
share it with me. I really would live you help.

Robin

Hi, maybe check the General Health section, because I posted a question sorta similar to this.. Im on Depo Provera and have found that its caused quite a bit of weight gain..
I was taking Zoloft for about 2 years for depression, and I got sick of taking pills every day that made me numb, so I quit that..(and am actually not depressed anymore.. it cleared up nicely..)

But I would say that anything that messes with your chemical balances and hormones could potentially cause weight gain (or loss in some cases, although I was never that lucky..) Ask your doctor, there are a couple anti-depressants out there (Welbutrin I believe) that may help with weight loss.. good luck!

I'm also on the deop shots. I talked to my doctor and was told the only way they cause weight gain was by increasing cravings for carbs. On Atkins and other low carb plans you should have those cravings under control though. It is strait proogesterone, no estrogen. Estrogen products are the ones usually associated with weight gain. You might look at other items in your diet, such as diet pops, for stallers or gainers.

Ah, well the weight gain from Depo has occured for a period of three years.. and Ive only been on Atkins for a few months.. Ive been losing of course, since on Atkins, but I gained considerably after going on Depo initially..

I also find that Depo has decreased my sex drive, and when it comes time for my next shot (next month) Im going to ask about alternatives.. possibly even an IUD, tired of all these hormones..

According to DANDR, ANY medication, hormonal or otherwise can interfere. He also says that our metabolisms can slow as early as our late 30's-wretched tho't! It is my personal opinion that you can probably overcome this by strictly foloowing the plan--with lots of water and a regular exercise routine, of course.

Try it and see. If you have a supportive doctor, ask about it. Good luck, keep us posted on your progress!
