Hi Stacy!

Sorry, but the two don't go together very well. One can of Slim Fast has over 25 grams of carb in it, mostly coming from sugar which is to be avoided on Atkins.
If you're not sure if low carbing is for you or even which plan would suit you (there's more than one!), click the link on the right side of the page titled "Which low carb plan is right for me?" and have a look.

Hi there,

if you decide to do Atkins or follow any other kind of low-carb eating plan, the best advise is for you to read the book first - it's not hard, but important to know what you are doing.

And to answer your question:

Atkins starts out with a 2-week introductory period during which your carb intake should be limited to 20 grams of carbs per day - and those carbs should come mostly from certain salads and vegetables.

I am not sure how many carbs one slimfast has - but I'm guessing more that those 20 - so no, combining those two seems to defeat the purpose of both.

Thanks for your responses. I have lost almost 40 pounds on the slim fast, walking and water, but I am at a stand still on the scales. I have an Aunt that has lost about 30 pounds in the same amount of time I have and she is doing the atkins diet. I will take a look at the different types of plans.

Thanks

Slim fast contains lots of sugar. U can do your walking and drinking either EAS Carb Control shakes and/or Atkins Shakes.

More importantly, low carbing teaches you a way to eat for the rest of your life. Slim Fast may work in the short term but it's pretty hard to make a permanent lifestyle change from it. There's no maintenance follow up so if you go back to eating the way you did, the pounds will follow.

My mother does a sort of Atkins/ Slimfast combo, but instead of Slimfast bars and shakes she eats Atkins bars and shakes. That could also work in the short term.

But I definitely agree with Karen. The real way to lose weight and keep it off is to learn good eating habits. The wonderful thing about low-carb (and a good part of the reason why it's successful as a long term way of eating) is because it's rarely that depriving. Most low carb plans include filling and delicious items with high fat, so it's a lot easier not to miss those carbs.

Anyway, I hope you find something that works for you! Keep up that walking, for sure.

Is there anybody out there that has tried the slim fast verses the atkins diet?

Can you do a comparison if you have tried both and which one did you do better with short and long term?

Thanks so much, like I said before I am at a stand still with the slim fast, also I think that I might be getting bored with it and I want to try something different.

Slim Fast is BORING - not good, in my estimation, for long term WOE, whereas Atkins is.

Default Ahhh, Slim fast....

Been there, done that...

Before doing Atkins, I did Slim fast for breakfast and lunch. The real tough part was the "sensible dinner". Well, I'd go home so darn hungery that I couldn't have eaten a light meal like they suggest.

When I started Atkins, I gave all my SF shakes and bars to a friend of my wifes. She is now asking my wife about LCing!!

Cheers!

Hi BrewWA

I dont get hungry using the slim fast anymore, its just that by supper time I just want to eat. Like I said I have lost almost 40 pounds on it, but I am not losing anymore now.

Have you lost your 50 pounds by doing the Adkins?

I did Slimfast years ago. I lost 30 pounds or so, mostly lean muscle mass and was still very flabby. I was tired and hungry all the time and only ate salad with low fat dressing and a little sandwich meat on top for my evening meals. A person can't live the rest of their lives being hungry all the time. I also developed bathroom problems from lack of fiber. I stopped it and gained much more back.

Around 3 years later I saw the Atkins book at the book store, "The No Hunger Way to Lose Weight" It caught my attention. I read the first chapter in the store and it made sense. I bought it and read it in a day. It took me several attempts to do it right but I kept trying and lost 58 pounds.

I tried to do maintenance while being pregnant but I got readdicted to carbs again. So, here I am with a wonderful 9 month old baby girl and doing Atkins with Body For Life. I'm growing muscle, getting smaller and "as God as my witness, I'll never be hungry again!"
