Default Atkins Advantage Bars on Induction

hello,
Im on my 6 day of induction and was wondering if I could have an Atkins Advantage Bar?
The package says 21 carbs per bar but only count 2 grams.
What does this mean??

Thanks
Jason

Hi Jason!

What that means is that Dr. Atkins feels that out of those 21 grams of carb only 2 have an impact on your blood sugar. The problem with that is that for some people, sugar alcohols DO have an impact on their blood sugar or certainly their weight loss. The sweet taste can also provoke cravings in a lot of people. My advice would be to avoid the Advantage bars for sure during induction and then after that, keep them to an occasional treat or something that you have on hand for emergencies where there is nothing else legal to eat. Many people also report that they don't like the taste anyway.
I've done some reading on Dr. Atkins site and there he does admit that these bars do tend to stall some people and he also recommends that for those who can have them without stalling their weight loss that they be limited to no more than 1 per day.

Jason,

Dr. Atkins says they're ok at all stages of the plan, but most of what I hear on this forum, and my own personal experience tells me that they are a big NO-NO!!

Especially on induction, you want your body to get rid of those "candy bar" kind of tastes and cravings and to let it get fully detoxed of sweet things. The Atkins bars are high in calories too.

But the "net" carb count of 2 gms. is because he does not consider the remainder of carbs as effecting the insulin response because they are from sugar alcohols. This is a common practice on those low-carb labels, but they are still considered "hidden carbs" and do effect some people in a bad way.

I have a few on hand in the fridge because when I go to a movie or something, I will chop one up and take a baggie with me...it feels like a candy bar, you know? But as part of my daily intake for food, no way. They don't really even satisfy, and I would never use one as a meal replacement.

My advice is to pass them up for a while...later when you're close to goal, see what they do for you. If they're not a problem for your system, fine!
