Default Thickener (like ThickNotThin)

I went to our health food store and had sticker shock over an 8 oz bag of ThickNotThin for $20. I looked at the ingredients and saw guar, xanthum, and one other thing. Guar and xanthum powders were available for $6-7 for 8 oz. Does anyone have experience using something other than ThickNotThin for sauces, soups, etc?

Yep! I went over a few different options in this thread. It's right here: roux.

Thanks so much Karen! That is exactly what I needed to know. I am off to buy xanthan gum.
