Default Supplements

Anyone else see the article in the NY Times today about how Americans are taking too many vitamin and mineral supplements? Dr. S stresses the need to supplement. What do you all think? So far I am just taking calcium and magnesium, but have seriously considered adding ALA.

Default I take lots

Here's what I take. I devised this list after reading Protein Power LifePlan. I was especially influenced by their chapter on magnesium. According to them it's the wonder mineral and we don't get enough. I have also used their recommendations for the types of supplements (chelates, natural E, etc.).

2000 mg salmon oil
300 mg ALA
100 mg CoQ10 (suspended in oil in a gel cap, not dry, very important)
100 mcg chromium
400 IU Natural E Complex
250 mg Magnesium chelate with...
99 mg Potassium chelate
1000 mg calcium with...
500 mg magnesium with...
30 mg zinc
2 high-potency men's formula multi-vitamins (2 is the recommended dosage)
250mg milk thistle

I take milk thistle and chromium for liver health since at one point I was concerned about it and a healthy liver is key to managing your blood sugar levels. I could probably stop taking them now.

I have also found a great online vitamin supplier: Swanson Vitamins. I am able to find the specific supplements in the formulas I want there. And their prices are more than reasonable.

I have been recording everything I take in a long. If I feel it is not helping I quit it and see if anything happens. Here is what I take:

Multiple vitamin
Extra Calcium Magnesium - at Night
Sometimes 5HTP - at night
ALA
CLA - for midsection fat I'll let you know if it works
Stress B
Omega 3 - because cancer runs in my family
Gingko Biloba (Didn't do anything noticible for me so I don't take it anymore)
