Question What's Up With This Wheat Bran Labelling?

Okay, I bought a box of Quaker wheat bran today. Here are the stats on the box for a 1/2 cup serving:

90 calories
3.6 g protein
1.4 g fat
16 g carbohydrate:
- 1.6 g starch
- 0.4 g sugar
- 14 g fiber

...but the calories don't add up. Note that it isn't the infamous Edensoy Effect , because the starch and sugar quantities are stated. Did they simply include fiber in the calorie count, forgetting that we humans can't extract those calories?

Fitday didn't help much, because they have unprocessed wheat bran as a slightly different product with a little more carb, more protein and a tad less fat.

Looks like they did include all the fiber in with the calorie count:

3.6 grams protein = 14.4 calories
1.4 grams fat = 12.6 calories
16 grams carb = 64 calories

Total = 91 calories

Which would be just dandy if you happen to be a cow.

If you take out the fiber, you get 2 grams ECC per 1/2 cup and 35 calories total that can be digested.

Wouldn't it be nice if everyone labeled their products consistently?

Could be; I've been called worse.

Yikes! I didn't mean it like that!

Just to clarify...only ruminants (such as bovines) have the enzymes to digest fiber such as wheat bran and grasses. I'd hate for someone to think I was trying to slam you.

Is it possible this is a Wheat Bran Cereal (and has other ingredients in it besides Wheat Bran? What does the Ingredients List (which it must have if there is more than one ingredient) say?

That being said, the labelling laws are pretty odd sometimes when it comes to calories and fiber... there's a post somewhere around here quite recently (the soy beans thread, I think) with some specifics about that, should be easy to find compared to going to the USDA or FDA websites . Was that your post, LisaN?
