Isn't it amazing? I'm currently taking a course about the social history of stimulants including coffee, sugar, etc. The political economy surrounding sugar in particular is fascinating, from its history of colonialization, slavery, and the like to the cultural rammifications that go along with what we choose to consume. There is no doubt that the increase in consumption of sugar has a lot to do with economic and political motives. If it were a new product... do you think the FDA would even approve it?!?
