Hi Pursuit!

Sliced side pork is as close as I can get to sugar and nitrate free bacon. Hope that helps!

Happy LCing

Lightbulb Bacon

I have been doing Atkins for a while...the first time on it (and this time) I eat bacon...I watch for the sugar content to be zero, but I don't focus a whole lot on the Nitrate issue. I am losing and at a steady rate. I think as long as it is not a huge amount then you would be o.k.....if you add it to your diet and you see a big difference in the rate of your weight loss then maybe try a different brand or eliminate it all together.....I hope this helps.

Default Thank you

Thanks for the response WatchMeNow!
Years back while on Atkins I located a sugar free and nitrate free bacon (pork)! I think perhaps it might have been canadian bacon?

Have found Sugar free bacon in the local health food store.
I tend to agree with your ideas and thanks so much for sharing!

Lightbulb

My experience has been that the SALT-reduced versions of most popular brands of bacon sold in regular grocery stores usually also contains way less or even no sugar. It will definitely be difficult to find any cured meat product without added nitrates.

Side Bacon? What dat?? Living down south in redneck country you would think I would know about side bacon, lol!

Could it be a side of a pig? Perhaps an uncured side?

Damn I hate to feel stupid, hahahaha!

Thanks for the responses and I will get educated here shortly!

Education complete.

There is a smoke house two miles from my home who also does butchering.

He will smoke "slab bacon" with hickory without any sugar or nitrite additives. He tells me Side Bacon and slab bacon are one and the same.

Price is comparable to store bought with a minimum purchase of 20 pounds.

Just wanted to pass the info on! Fortunately lots of porker growers in the surrounding area! Everyone needs one or two for their barbies in the summer and sell excess to the smoke house operator!
