Default Hidden Carbs Question

I still don't understand the hidden carbs.

I have this cheesecake.

45 Calories
0 Fat
0 Protein
1.05 carbs

First off I put it under sweets and it says it has 12 carbs and 10 fat.

How can this be? If a product has no carbs and no fat how can this be?

Hi there Holly,

You have obviously not got the full information about this product.

1 gram of carbs gives about 4 calories, which leaves about 40 calories unaccounted for. I would suggest you ask the manufacturer for full disclosure of the nutritional information.
Bear in mind that if the cheesecake has some cream cheese, it MUST have some protein at the very least.

Um, why would you want a product that is so low in fat? Atkins is not only NOT a low fat programme, Dr Atkins specifically warns against trying to do the programme without eating adequate fat.

Holly....

Something's wrong with that picture. Foods are combined of fat, protein and carbs. If your cheesecake has no fat and no protein, all of the calories have to be coming from carbs. Since a gram of carb has roughly 4 calories per gram (protein also has about 4 and fat has about 9), that means your cheesecake has about 11.25-12 grams of carb in it.
I'm guessing that the majority of those carbs are coming from sugar alcohols (sorbitol, maltitol or erythritol) and are therefore being discounted because they are thought to have no appreciable impact on blood sugars, but not everyone is immune to sugar alcohols and many people actually count the full carb count even if the package says you don't have to.
Now, if a lot of those carbs are coming from fiber, you can deduct them from the total because our bodies lack a necessary enzyme to digest fiber so it passes undigested through our bodies and has no impact on blood sugar.

This is what they say:

Per Slice

Calories 45
Fat 0
Cholesterol 0
Sugar 0
Carbs 1.05
Fiber .15

Ingredients Fat Free Cream Cheese, Egg Substitute, Splenda, Vanilla, Crumbs

What do you think of that? I though the Crumbs were what made up most of the carbs.

Also, I am not trying to eat foods with less fat. I am eating enough fat, this was just cheesecake I found without carbs and it just so happened to not have fat either.

I can only repeat what I said in my previous post, that some information has been withheld.

There MUST be protein in it, from the cream cheese and egg substitute.

And as they don't mention any sugar alcohols in the ingredient list, I'll also repeat that you should ask the manufacturer for more information. You obviously cannot assume the info given is correct, as it is missing so much. 1.05 grams carbs cannot and does not equal 45 calories! Try emailing or phoning the manufacturer and explain that they are missing either ingredients or nutritional information.

In short, I would not trust this info for a second. There may well be way more carbs than 1.05 per slice.

Angry hidden carbs

for this reason, I'm gun shy about eating anything but induction foods-
it is sad when you can't trust the labels

Default Hidden carb counter

I ran the cheesecake numbers in the forum's Hidden Carbs Inspector and this is what it said:

Calculated Information

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Carbohydrates factor 3.84063

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fat factor 8.82671

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Protein factor 4.28361

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Actual Carb count 11.72 g

Difference by weight 10.67 g

Those 45 calories had to come from somewhere . Even if the protein was .9 g (reads 0 because manufacturers are allowed to round down ) and the fat was .9 g (reads 0), the remaining calories must come from carbohydrates (or sugar alcohols as Lisa N suggested).

What are the crumbs made from? Cookies? Bread? Graham crackers? Insufficient data there, as well!

Just 'cause it's in print doesn't make it factual.

Wish the news were better, but it ain't. So sorry to shatter the dream.

RESPONSE
Hi Holly,

In response to your question, the crumbs are accounted for in
the information. The nutritional information is determined
by the ingredients, as with any product. The ingredients are
as stated on our menu/website: Fat-free cream cheese, Egg-
substitute, Splenda, Vanilla, Crumbs. Thank you~"

Wink Defendant is being non-responsive, your Honor...

Kind of a non-answer, IMHO. Nothing they said would constitute a guarantee, either, IMHO.

They didn't even acknowledge where the 45 calories come from! (as if you didn't know that 1 gram of carbs is only 4 calories.)

Not sure I'd recommend their products.

Hmmmm, maybe the government folks who oversee accurate food labeling (FDA?) might be interested in how they produce 41 calories from nothing? lol
