Default Carb Binge and Stomach Pain????

I am saying binge, but it was not really.. I was just out in a place where the only things they served for lunch were pasta and bread.. which I had.. it was not a small amount either.

Later on that day I was in agony - and all through the night as I had SUCH a bloated feeling and trapped wind in my stomach, I thought something was seriously wrong with me.

I did come down with a virus and am only getting over that now, but the bloated stomach pain I am SURE came from eating white pasta and bread in amounts that I have not eaten for the longest time now. Is it possible? Has anyone else had that reaction to carbs??? I also took a little bit of my daughters toast this morning to test my theory out.... same feeling in the tummy but nowhere near as bad!! Had indigestion for ages after it.

I do NOT want that again so I will be making sure white flour goods dont pass my lips again!

Would love some feedback on this.

Thanks,
Karen

Yep, a little food containing a high amount of carbs (flour etc.) and my stomach will feel like the goodyear blimp - very uncomfortable.

Keep this in mind as a good reason to stay away from that stuff!

I can sure relate to those stomach problems. When I eat complex carbs like rice, potato, pasta, or bread I get terribly sick in my stomach. I feel like I swallowed a torch on fire. I had irritable bowel syndrome a few years ago and it was the most terrible thing in the world. You don't go ANYWHERE unless you know ahead of time where the bathroom is. And you are still taking a risk. For some reason, I just don't digest complex carbs. Even if I never lost another pound, I would eat this way forever because as long as I stick with it, my stomach and digestion is perfect. What a relief!! Cindi

Default Interesting...

Your post got me to remember that before I restarted Atkins, I would love to have at least one apple a day. Thing is, that at some point I became acutely aware of the fact that each time I ate an apple (or almost any fruit) in the am, I'd feel bloated and uncomfortable all day. I wonder if this is due to carbs/sugar, or if there is actually something going on with a systemic yeast problem? When I'm doing LC, I don't get that bloating.

Thanks for all the replies.. its good to know I am not the only one that had such a severe reaction and you can BET that I wont be consuming large amounts of white flour products at all.

I seem to be okay with fruits like strawberries and blue, black, and Raspberries. I even had a banana the other day for a treat and I was okay.

I have always known that I have an "allergic" reaction to white flour and sugar.. but have never suffered the physical symptoms like that... I just used to NOT stop eating it hahahhahaha.. Now the cravings have gone and if a "wee taste" causes that reaction I wont ever bother with it.

here's to happy healthy low carb eating!

Default Enzymes?

I have the same problem. I always keep a baggie with chewable digestive enzymes in my purse for emergencies. I rarely eat the white 'poison' but sometimes it's hard to avoid. I will chew a few as I'm eating it and a few after. I think when you don't eat it for a long time your body no longer produces the enzymes to break them down.

May be all in my head, but it does seem to help.

I had stomach pain for years, went to two specialists and had two gastrascopes, and was told I had IBS and then GERD. However, from my own research neither of those dx's sounded right to me.

Then I went lC for my PCOS and IR and after about 2 months my pain went away. All I needed to keep the pain at bay was a cup of peppermint tea in the morning.

Then during Christmas I ate really badly, and the pain came back. Now I am S L O W L Y getting back on track and my stomach's getting better.

So theres a definite connection between carbs and stomach pain for sure. Atkins mentioned it in his CNN interview and Schwartzbean also talks about it.

Yup...many people have a sensitivity to grains and other foods and don't even realize it until they stop eating those foods for a period of time and then start eating them again. When your body isn't used to a steady onslaught of the foods that it is sensitive to, even a small amount can trigger a much more severe reaction than before. Look on the bright side...now you have really good motivation to avoid those types of foods in the future.
