Default Coconut cream or coconut milk

I'm trying to expand my tastebud horizons, so I bought a can of coconut cream today, and then went looking for some info here.

I did find 1 post that said there were 240 calories and 6 carbs in 1 cup of coconut milk (not cream), but....

For 1 cup, Fitday says ....

Nuts, coconut milk, canned (liquid expressed from grated meat and water) = 445 calories, 6 grams carbs

Nuts, coconut cream, raw (liquid expressed from grated meat)
= 792 calories, 16 grams of carbs

Looks like the carbs are reversed from dairy products (cream is higher than milk). Is the 240 cals mentioned above wrong or am I missing something?

G'day Judy,

I find the carb counts for coconut cream and milk vary dramatically from brand to brand. They do seem (here, at least) to be lower for cream, but it's just a matter of reading labels and counting the carbs. In fact, when I find one I want to use, I enter it into Fitday as a custom food.

HTH!

Roz

Hi Roz,

I couldn't find any info on the can, but you're right. I took a 2nd look and, would you believe, they've put another label over top of the nutrients list.

That made me a little suspicious, so after washing the label off--nothing special about the nutrients--I searched the net for the manufacturer listed on the can. Turns out it's in Russia, even though the extra label said "Product of Vietnam". There are several "Distributor" companies listed, from the States, Canada, the UK and Australia, but I can't find one of them on the net. That's really odd.

Another thing that bothers me is the expiry date on the bottom of the can. It says COCBBAC-J.17.02--looks to me like either June or July 17, 2002.

It may all be a tempest in a teapot, but I think I'll take this one back to the store for a refund.

Now I'm off to try and find out if there's a nutrient difference between Florida and Mexico avocados.

Thanks again.

If it helps the Russian for carbohydrates is 'UGLEVODI' although in Cyrillic writing it looks different: ÓÃËÅÂÎÄÛ.

This may or may not look correst on your computer depending on what fonts you have installed.

P.S. Dates on Russian products are the date of manufactor, not the date of expiry. Also Russia (and Belarus) have very high legal standards for food (better than those in Britain) and you can confidently eat anything made in, or exported to, Russia.

Hi Robert,

Thanks for the information. It says right on the can that the expiry date is on the bottom, but there's another date on the top of the can that says COCBBAC.J18.01 which is probably the manufacturer date.

There doesn't appear to be any Russian printing anywhere on the can. The only reason I thought it was from Russia is that it says it was manufactured by Interfood Processing Industry and when I did a search, it was a Russian site that came up. I took another look today and, although the page was Russian (so I couldn't read most of it), there is an address shown in English and I see now that it is in Vietnam.

I'd have no qualms about any product produced in or on behalf of a Russian company or in Vietnam--it was simply the expiry date that turned me off.

Thanks for making me take a second look.
