Hi there, Well the whole time I was hypothyroidism and because part of the symptoms is depression my doctor put me on Paxil I was weighing 240. Boom a year later still on Paxil 320 Come to find out I had hypothyroidism and should of been on Synthyroid. Anyway there slowly increasing my doses I'm on .05mcg nothing yet in the weightloss I don't gain anymore either though I just stay the same. Yuk.........Anyway if anyone out there experienced the same problem with Paxil I would be interested in hearing your story. Thanks, Kelly

I also was on Paxil for the past 3 years and gained 50lbs during that time, going from my usual size 11/12 and 165lbs (5'9") to size 18 and 220lbs. I can only attribute the magnitude of the gain to Paxil, because I have never had this kind of weight problem in my life (I'm 37).

Paxil just wasn't working for me anymore, so my doctor switched me to Celexa recently and it is great! Now I just need to get the weight off. I'm trying low carbing and walking 30mins on the treadmill daily....no results yet (only been 3 weeks!) but I'll hang in there - and you should too!

I've been on Prozac for a few years and have gained weight. Both my sisters are on Paxil and have gained weight. Is it from Prozac or Paxil? Probably.

I've heard that Celexa and Wellbutrin also cause weight gain.

I have not personally taken Paxil.. but my husband did and gained steadily although he was seriously dieting and cycling 100-150 miles a week. Once they changed him to a different anti-depressant (wellbutrin) he stopped gaining and started losing at a phenomenal pace. I took Prozac for a year and had no weight gain. I wasn't exercising or dieting. I now take Wellbutrin and I don't see that it is making me hungrier or making me gain weight. My doctor SWEARS it can actually cause weight loss rather than gain.
I do have hypothyroidism and I really believe it is the cause of my slow weight loss. I have had to really fight my doctor to raise my thyroid meds to put me lower in the so called normal range on my tests. After agreeing, under protest, he raised my synthroid and I finally stopped gaining and am currently experiencing weight loss through low-carb eating. I follow sugar-busters WOE.

Don't hesitate to ask your doctor to change your anti-depressant meds. There are TONS of them out there and every person is different.. keep trying until you find one that fits YOUR body.
