*sigh* to good to be true. Actual carb count is still 20.53, by the hidden calculator on this site:

After entering all the info, I chose the category "Grains and pastas", if you check mark the "Subtracted fiber" only if the label states that the carb counts have already been modied by the fiber amount.

At first I thought it meant "Do I want to subtract it?" Heck yes! LOL But no, that is not what they were asking.

'twod me a miracle if that little statement was there!

The reason it's negative is because the manufacturer, not only subtracted the fiber, but they also subtracted calories equal to the amount fiber. It's none standard, as calories cannot be subtracted!

This is a case of hidden carbs and hidden calories

At least we know, the 20 grams of carbs, is after subtracting fiber.

i.e., the 3 slices contain 59 grams of carbs, 39 of which is fiber. You can always assume that, when they list more fiber than carbs.

Actually, it's NOT hidden calories. Manufacturers are now pre-subtracting the fiber BEFORE the calories are calculated. This is accurate, and how it "should" be done. Hopefully it will soon be done by all manufacturers. Then consumers will be able to look at a food label, and see at a glance how many grams of carbohydrate there are (which contribute calories) .. and this may be further broken down to detail how much sugar .... and then grams of fiber will be listed separately, since they do NOT contibute calories. It's my observation that more and more manufacturers are doing this. Hopefully it will soon be law, and ALL companies will be doing this consistently. Right now it's confusing.

I'm so upset and disappointed with myself right now I can't even verbalize.....typelize....whatever.

hi lilshug,

Dr. ATkins is right .. but it's all a matter of timing. His most recent book was published in December 2001 ... but the regulations for telling manufacturers to pre-subtract fiber isn't LAW yet, not in the US nor Canada. It probably will soon be, and trust me, I'll be posting here as soon as it happens.

Anyway .. right now, as of May 2002, it's still voluntary for manufacturers to pre-subtract fiber. So, not everyone is doing it, and you need to be a detective. Generally a good clue is if the fiber count is higher than the total carb count. Or if the count is too good to be true when you do subtract.

To further add to the confusion ... non-manufactured foods will be held to a different labelling standard. That means fresh produce such as broccoli, a head of lettuce, etc ...

No, you can subtract fiber.

But there's two ways of looking at it:

1. Subtract: 20 grams carbs - 39 g fiber

2. Subtract: 59 grams carb - 39 grams fiber = 20 grams carbs

Number 2 is the correct way, and the result is 20 grams carbs, just like the label said, because they already subtracted the fiber for you.

You know there's some WASA Crispbreads that are 1 slice for 30 calories, 7 g of carbs, and 2 of fiber. That's for the Fiber Rye brand. I like them a lot for smearing peanut butter on, or tuna.

Default Pork Rinds Snack

I got this off another thread, but it sounds really good, I'll be trying it tonight. Heck, it's gaming night for the men, might even see if they like it....

Ingredients: 1 bag (full size -- 3-4 oz.) plain pork rinds 15 pkgs Splenda 4 tablespoons butter 1 tablespoon cinnamon Drizzle melted butter over the rinds or put in a plastic bag and shake well to coat. Mix Splenda and cinnamon in a paper bag, then drop pork rinds into bag and shake, shake, shake! If they become soft or soggy later, put them in a warm oven and let them crisp up again. Serves 4. 3 carbs per serving.
