Lose Weight! 5 Foods to Eat. 5 to Avoid

By Cathryn Conroy, CompuServe News Editor
Some diets are very complicated. You have to measure, count, and weigh. This one is simple! Just add five foods to your menu and subtract five others. You'll stay healthy and lose weight. Weight loss coach Jonny Bowden, the author of "Jonny Bowden's Shape Up! The Eight-Week Plan to Transform Your Body, Your Health, and Your Life" and the creator of what we'll call "The Fives Diet," told iVillage, "Even a week of diligence on this plan should yield some results."

Add These Five Foods:
1. Fiber: Best sources are vegetables, fruits, and beans.
2. Raw vegetables: From broccoli to zucchini, eat your veggies every day. Fresh veggie juice counts, too!
3. Berries: Says Jonny, "The reasons berries are beneficial for your health could fill an entire column. Trust me."
4. Nuts: They're all packed with GOOD fat and protein. Serving: quarter-cup.
5. Protein: Eat some kind of protein at every meal. Fish is best.

Buy "Jonny Bowden's Shape Up! The Eight-Week Plan to Transform Your Body, Your Health, and Your Life" from Amazon.com.

Subtract These Five Foods:
1. Pasta: We know. This is hard. Do it anyway.
2. Most bread: Don't eat it unless it's REAL whole-grain bread.
3. Commercial cereals: If it comes in a box--unless it's non-instant oatmeal--don't eat it.
4. Sodas: This includes diet sodas, too.
5. Packaged desserts: That means cookies, cakes, pies, and crackers.

Use these diet tools from iVillage to figure out how much weight you need to lose--if any!

HMMM, Sounds like he has been studying some lowcarb books...

Yeah but he left off the most important thing. FAT.

Sounds like his diet, whomever would follow it would be hungry all the time

sounds sane, healthy, and doable. I hope a few people follow it because of his advice or that notice.

I'd tweak it, of course (need to write my own book, then, don't i?)--seeds are as good as nuts, and no grain is necessary or, from all evidence, very healthy for us, even instant oatmeal (or, for that matter, steel-cut oats!).

This plan of his is new. He has been a booster of low carbing over at iVillage for quite a while. I used to post on the Atkins boards there and check into his columns too.
